Muay Thai is best practiced while in a ring with an experienced instructor or training partner. The use of heavy bags, Thai pads, and safety equipment are an essential part of the training regimen. Muay Thai is rich with Thai history and culture. Respect and honor play a major role in the sport, as seen in the Wai Kru, which is a ceremonial warm up that is done before each fight. Performing the Wai Kru is a way for a fighter to pay respect primarily to one’s teacher. Thai boxing is not only for fighters. Many people find it to be one of the most intense workouts you can find while training in a usable form of self defense. It has been noted that Muay Thai will burn up to 1000 calories in a single workout.

Legends Introduction to Muay Thai The martial art of Muay Thai is practiced all over the world, although it is most common in Thailand (where it is the countries national sport) and other south east Asia countries. Although Muay Thai literally means Thai boxing, it is spoken of in Thailand as being the martial art of eight limbs (the shins, knees, elbows and hands). Together, these eight limbs are known as the "na-wa arwud". The head is another part of the body which is included in this, however it is now very rarely allowed within rules to be used (such as heabutts). Muay Thai's techniques revolve around these points of the body, and as explained further in the practice/training section of this guide - mainly consist of punching, kicking, kneeing, and clinching. The origin of this style is accredited to the Ayuddhaya period of 1584, when Thailand was ruled by King Naresuan. This ground-breaking form was a result of the various invasions that the country was subject to at that period of time. This was when the citizens felt the need for a method of self defense. This form of hand to hand combating comprises of changing movements which makes use of the sturdy body parts such as elbows, legs, head and fists. These are some of the eight weapons that hold prime importance in this style of fighting. The system also has provision for the efficient use of basic weapons.
