Netball is a sport similar to and derived from basketball , and was originally known in its country of origin, the United States , as "women's basketball". Invented by Australia and New Zealand and is popular in Jamaica Barbados South Africa Sri Lanka , and the United Kingdom
Description and rules
Diagram of a netball court. Like basketball, the game is played on a hard court with scoring rings at both ends, and with a ball resembling a basketball (but lighter, smaller and slightly softer in construction, even mainly white). The hoops are of smaller dimension and height in comparison to basketball hoops, though they contain no backboards. The court is divided into thirds which regulate where individuals in each team are allowed to move, and two semi-circular "shooting circles" at each end from within which all scoring shots must be taken. There are seven players on each team, who are given nominated, named positions. (Some junior/training variants have only five players per team.) Each player must wear a "bib" showing one of the abbreviations below, indicating that player's position. Each player is only allowed in certain areas of the court: a player in a section of court that is not part of their playing area is deemed "offside". The positions are described below: Netball positions Position Name Abbreviation Opponent Areas permitted Goal Shooter GS Goal Keeper Attacking goal third including goal circle

With the national team, the Silver Ferns , currently ranked second in the world, netball maintains a high profile in New Zealand. As in other netball-playing countries, netball is considered primarily a women's sport; men's and mixed teams exist at different levels, but are ancillary to women's competition. In 2008, 138,000 players were registered with Netball New Zealand the governing body for organised netball in the country. Organised competition ranges from interschool and local club netball to premier domestic competitions such as the ANZ Championship , with the pinnacle for netball players in New Zealand being selection for the national team.

Netball by Karlie Walker Introduction Netball is a popular game for girls and boys in Australia. You have special positions. There are seven players on each team. The aim of the game is to get the ball down the other end of the court so that your team can shoot a goal. The position you are in allows you to go over different lines and do different things. For example Goal Shooter (GS) gets inside the semi circle and shoots a goal. Netball is a very good sport and it keeps you fit and healthy. History Netball started in 1990 and became a very popular game. Netball in usually played outdoors. In 1990 there were 105,930 players playing netball. Netball was invented by Canadian-American James Naismith in 1891. Basketball was changed from women’s basketball to women’s netball. Men and women started playing netball in a team together so that is why it is so popular. Positions There are seven positions in netball which are Goal Shooter (GS), Goal Attack (GA), Wing Attack (WA), Centre (C), Wing Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD) and Goal Keeper (GK). GS has the WA, GA, and the C to pass the ball to and try to get a goal.
