Golden Eagle Lodge lives in the deep tranquility of ancient forests. Tucked away on Flour Lake near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, cross country skiers can explore an area once traveled by fur trappers. Three-million acres of pine, birch, balsam and aspen in the Superior National Forest are white-capped with an average of 120 inches of whispery powder throughout the winter. This is World-Class cross-country skiing at its best! A well-marked network of more than 70 km of trails, groomed and tracked regularly with Kassboher Pisten Bully snowcats, begin curving away into pristine beauty right from your cabin’s doorsteps. Our trail system has been specifically built for this purpose and all trails are tracked for traditional skiing along with a portion for skate skiing. Enjoy the romance of night skiing on Wolf Point, a 1.5 km loop near the lodge. We light this loop two nights a week with Kerosene Lanterns—a beautiful sight—and the remaining five nights with strings of Twinkling Electric Lights. The Aurora Borealis even kicks in every now and then for a dazzling late-night light show. If you would like to do more than just skiing, try Snowshoeing the Big Foot Trail, Ice Skating on our ice rink, or there are opportunities for Dogsledding nearby. Stargazing or a walk on a moonlit night create some unforgettable memories. More information about other Winter activities is available on the

Cross Country Skiing
There are several great options for cross-country skiing in the Marble area. For skiers who like to go into the backcountry, one of the most popular routes is an US Forest Service road that takes off to the south side of the McClure Pass summit on Highway 133. Skiers start at an elevation of about 9,000 feet and climb to about 9,800 feet in 6.5 miles. This road is not groomed, so the conditions can vary widely from day to day. Some days snowmobiles have been on the trail and the skiing will be well packed. Other days no one has been up there and the trail may be all powder. You will ski or skate ski through tall stands of spruce, a forest of aspens, and some scenic meadows. There is no avalanche danger along this trail. It is a dirt road in the summer that accesses several cabins at the base of Chair Mountain. It is skiable on public land from mid-November to mid- to late April. At the point you come to a second gate, which is open, the property is all private and you should not go any farther without permission from the property owners. At the second gate you are ready to turn around and have a fun downhill ski back out. There are a variety of users on the trail: skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobiles. On weekends it can be crowded. There are some great viewpoints of Chair Mountain along the way, so make sure to take your camera. Another area is the
