    Olympic Lifting
To Olympic lift, or not to Olympic lift?
Olympic lifting provides benefits to all types of CrossFitters. For those of you who CrossFit to lose inches, reduce stress, or to maintain a healthy lifestyle consider this: Olympic lifting has been proven to aid in added bone strength, increase muscular endurance and coordination, as well as develop the physical capacity to withstand stress. The last point certainly resonates with me. CrossFit is a stress reliever for many of us. For those athletes who CrossFit to compete or just simply have that severe competitive craving consider this: Numerous studies have demonstrated that the Olympic lifts have the unique capacity to develop strength, muscle, power, speed, and vertical leap unlike any other exercise. In addition Oly lifts have been shown to increase maximum oxygen uptake, the most important marker for cardiovascular fitness. As many of you have noticed, lately at BCCF we have incorporated the “Burgener Warmup” in just about every workout in some way or another. This warmup is crucial to mastering both Olympic lifts, which in turn will aid all of us in maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of your CrossFit experience.

Functional Path Training
The Functional Path is a path that had been traveled many times before but had fallen out of use in favor of smoother paved roads that promised faster and easier results. Seeking to follow and better define the functional path is a continuing journey, fortunately it is a journey that many have traveled before. Functional Path training is getting back to the basics of movement. It is learning to tune into the body and it’s inherent wisdom to produce rhythmic flowing movement.
Olympic Lifting - Sheep Walking Again The following is an excerpt from my book. In light of the sheep walking phenomenon (Blindly following the flock)I observed at the NSCA Convention I thought this would be appropriate. Hope it makes you think. In the athlete development process the role of Olympic style weight training has occupied a large role. This has good and bad implications. Olympic style weight lifting is a training method that is excellent for developing power. Olympic lifting consists of two movements, the clean and jerk and the snatch. The derivatives of those movements are what make up the majority of the training exercises. There is no question of the inherent value of these exercises as a tool to raise explosive power, but once again the method must be kept in context and reconciled with the overall goal of the strength training program.
In order to achieve optimum return there are several key points that must be considered: the first point is that Olympic lifting is a sport. That sport consists of lifting as much weight as possible in the clean and jerk and the snatch. Those lifts have a high technical demand, but the skill is a closed skill that occurs in a narrow range of movement. The Olympic lifting movements do produce tremendous power production because of the distance the weight must travel, the weight and the speed requirements. This power production is highly dependent on the technical proficiency of the individual lifter. Essentially, the training of the weight lifter consists of the actual Olympic lifts and some derivative and assistance exercises. There is no running, jumping or other demands on their system. The sole focus is on lifting as much weight as possible.

Olympic Lifting Exercises for Sports Training
Olympic lifting is a sport in which athletes compete in two liftsthe: (a) clean and jerk and (b) snatch. The goal is to lift the highest single maximum repetition.
Female athletes whose sports require speed and agility, power, and whole body coordination can leverage tremendous advantages by training with variations of these lifts.
These exercises are performed with a special lifting bar. The standard length is 7 feet. The plates fit on the 2" wide bar and rotate freely. See Olympic Weight Sets
Smaller exercise bars do not promote balance and smooth lifting movements, so if you use them (not recommended), be sure to allow a small space when you clamp the plates to permit free rotation.
Olympian Lidia Valentin (Bruce Klemens Photo)
The training goal for female athletes is to improve sport performance by using these ballistic exercises, which simulate jumping and sprinting movements common to many sports.
The Power Clean is a variation of the clean portion of the clean and jerk. In the clean, the athlete raises the bar from the floor to shoulders.
The difference in the power clean is that the bar is racked (caught) at a higher position, rather in a full

    Olympic Lifting
Here we see this dude busting out a power snatch and a couple clean and jerks. These are great exercises for overall strength and conditioning, but not necessarily for specific strength or for bodybuilding purposes. If you are looking to be a powerlifter or a bodybuilder, chances are Olympic lifting is not for you, at least not on a consistent basis. On the other hand, if you are trying to condition yourself for martial arts, for strongman training, to look good naked, or just for overall health and functionality, then Olympic lifting could be for you. It takes a couple sessions to really understand how to perform these moves, and keeping perfect form is key to successful Olympic lifting.
Integrating Olympic Training into Your Workout Program
I enjoy power cleans, hang cleans, snatches, and push press, but all Olympic lifts have most excellent benefits. Women can do them too since Olympic training typically builds neurological efficiency, strength (to a certain degree), and power. For the most part Olympic training does not build much muscle mass.
