In Brief We love the Olympics. Not because it gives us a glimpse of who we expect to see selling cars and toothpaste to us for the next six months, but because the Games embody the spirit of the amateur. Or at least they’re supposed to. If you really want to see the embodiment of the amateur, start looking at the early games. Like the guy who ran the 1904 marathon in dress shoes. Or the entire team that couldn't pay the landing fees in Los Angeles because they didn't sell enough coffee en route. When the flames at Sydney got stuck on that little mechanical track this year, the organizers looked bad. Trust us: that was nothing Party On You might also be interested in Circus Maximus: Rome's Astrodome

Olympic Goo - Algae Invades Qingdao Sailing Venue
Boating and Sailing News 01 Jul 2008
Qingdao, China - With all of the preparations China has made for the Olympic games, there is one factor that wasn't accounted for: "The Goo." A strain of algae called Enteromorpha Prolifera has invaded the area, and is taking up more than a third of the Olympic sailing courses. This isn't what you would find in a swimming pool. Stringy, slimy and notably smelly, this explosion of Olympic Goo floats on the surface, forming thick mats, and looks something like day-glow seaweed. Sailing through it isn't going to be an option, and China knows it. Officials had hoped that the recent year's decline in the problem would continue through the games, but some say this is the worst bloom in years. China is combating the problem by sending thousands of fishermen and students out to clean it up - by hand! With five weeks to go before the games, sailors will need every bit of training time on the courses they can get, and the massive manpower has been rallied in the hope of cleaning up the bright green masses within the next two weeks. Qingdao Olympic Sailing Committee member Yuan Zhiping told reporters "We have stressed to all the people devoted to this campaign that the priority should [be] given to the Olympic venue and we expect to eliminate all these sea weeds before 15 July."

Hoist a cold one: $18 mill taking chill out of USOC - IOC relationship
pm To paraphrase a famous utterance, the financial agreement announced Thursday between the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International is a small step in settling account ledgers and a giant leap in getting past the idea that this was more about settling accounts than reaching a reasonable solution. "To the Moon, Alice." The result of all the squabbling over games costs, the issue more easily taken out of play, and revenue sharing, which will remain much harder to solve, gave those of us who cover the Olympics some wonderfully vitriolic outbursts to report. So where does it all stand now, and how did the parties get there? The war of words ended with the departure of Hein Verbruggen from the IOC and Peter Ueberroth as chairman of the USOC.

OLYMPIC GAMES MEDALLISTS
The modern Olympics were first held in 1896. The Games are held every 4 years (this period is known as an Olympiad) although an additional "intercalated" event, not officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee, was introduced in 1906. The 1910 "intercalated" Games were cancelled and the idea dropped. The 1916, 1940 and 1944 events were also not held due to the First and Second World Wars.

The Games are currently held every two years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia , Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement , whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and snow sports, the
