Christine Jennings, who also swam in the 10K in which Fran Crippen died, spoke to the Washington Post The other American, Christine Jennings , said she vomited several times in the water. Jennings, 23, got dizzy and veered off course. Fearing she would black out, she turned over and swam on her back with an arm in the air to signal her distress to the safety boats that are supposed to follow the swimmers in such races. But when no one responded, Jennings struggled to the finish, where she staggered out of the water with the help of a fellow swimmer and was taken to a hospital. The Post In the LA Times, physician and swimmer Larry Wiesenthal said Could Crippen could have been saved had he been pulled from the water immediately upon collapse and received emergency medical care?  It may be impossible to know for certain.  However, Jennings stated that she tried to signal for help but that her efforts went unnoticed.  Many people have asked whether FINA needs to establish an upper limit on water temperatures, but race support seems to have been just as important an issue in this tragedy.

SWIMMING REGULATIONS
Municipal code regulates swimming along shorelines in Seattle. There are two sections of the Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) that address this activity. SMC 16.28.010 indicates that swimming is prohibited except:
  • in designated swimming areas
within 50 feet from shore, unless the swimmer is accompanied by a boat which is within 25 feet of the swimmer
  • SMC 18.12.180 states that watercraft cannot operate within 75 feet of a swimming beach, and powered watercraft cannot operate within 300 feet of a swimming beach. To maintain a clearly defined swimming beach, lifeguards discourage swimming immediately outside the lifeguarded area. In the interest of public safety, there is need to maintain a defined perimeter buffer of 75 feet from the swimming area on Green Lake and 150 feet from the swimming areas on Lake Washington. These perimeters are established in SMC 18.12.040 under the Superintendent's rulemaking authority.

The Pennock Island challenge started in 2004 by William Schulz as a one time event to raise money for the American Diabetes Association and awareness about diabetes. The first swim raised about $6000.00 for the ADA. Curiosity about open water swimming and the lack of any organized open water races in Alaska prompted the repeat of the swim in 2005. The 2005 swim featured 24 swimmers including an Olympian and U.S. National open water swimming champion. In 2005 the event raised nearly $12,000.00 for the ADA. Interest began to grow with many inquiries but no real action, the 2006 featured 21 swimmers from Ketchikan and around Alaska and raised about $10,000.00. In 2007 the swim was sanctioned by USMS and took a dramatic turn towards success. We had 39 swimmers enter, from three different countries, bringing a whole bunch of open water experience with them. The event raised $13,000.00 for the American Diabetes Association. The 2008 swim features online entry and fundraising through www.active.com
