Open Water Swimming
Each summer in Victoria, thousands of people of all ages take to the beaches around Port Phillip and Westernport bays and the ocean beaches to participate in the fantastic sport of Open Water Swimming. For some, it's just a great way to combine their love of swimming and the freedom of swimming in the open water. For others, it's what they train through the cold winter months for, swimming hundreds of kilometres up and down the pool. And for some, they just love the excitement and atmosphere of the events. The profile of the sport has recently been lifted with the introduction of the 10km event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and distance pool swimmers of the calibre of Grant Hackett and Craig Stephens mixing it with the Australian open water racing stalwarts. Why not give it a try - there are shorter novice races at some of the events if you're not sure if you're ready for the full distance. Have a look at the Open Water Swim Calendar to find an event that suits you.

Open water swimming
I'm thinking of doing a triathlon and have never done any open water swimming. I've done a bike century and some 5k runs but the ocean swimming scares me. Does anybody have any advice on how to get used to swimming out there? Do I have to practice training in the ocean or will training in a pool be enough? 1 posts since Jul 9, 2007 Currently Being Moderated Sep 1, 2004 9:38 PM in response to: AndyGeorge Re: Open water swimming you need to get in the ocean. i was surprised to find it EASIER than the pool. i had NEVER done any open water swimming before this month.. actually, i just learned to swim this summer and this weekend i completed my first sprint tri... if i can do it, anyone can. GOOD LUCK! 2 posts since Jul 9, 2007

Marine Life On Channel Swims
Earlier this week, Anne Cleveland announced her Double-Double Channel Swim (i.e., two-way crossing of both the English Channel and Catalina Channel). But she is also selfless in always freeing up her busy schedule as a coach and motivational speaker to help other channel swimmers realize their dreams.

Hazen Kent - Tri-Newbies Online Please understand, I am not trying to add to anyone’s existing fears of swimming in open waters. But for me to say, "you have nothing to worry about, swimming in the open water is a piece of cake” would be a lie. It can be a wonderful experience but you must be aware of your surroundings and practice safe swimming. Below we will discuss some tips and suggestions for training and racing in the open water that may help you focus less on your trepidations and more on your performance! So let’s get to it!
