Home About Us 2010 Race Schedule ... Weather Development Around Mothers Beach Threatens Access
Marina Outrigger is part of the the Marina del Rey Community Boating Council. MdRCBC is a coalition of recreational boating groups and users working to ensure access and act as a cohesive voice for small craft recreational boaters, including canoes, kayaks, sculls, rowing shells, sailboats, paddleboards, and standup paddleboards.
Currently there is a development proposed adjacent to the beach which will convert a crucial parking lot used by recreational boaters. This threatens access by members of our club as well as other community groups (Boys and Girls Club, LA Rowing Club, Kayaks4Kidz, Boys Scouts, Santa Monica Paddlers) as well as individual users of the beach.
Please support us in our efforts to notify the County that this threatens access to the beach:

By BONNIE TSUI Published: May 28, 2004 ON a balmy Saturday morning, it's practice as usual for the New York Outrigger Club. What this group of outrigger canoe enthusiasts hears is not the crashing waves of the Pacific or the whistle of cool Hawaiian trade winds, but the shouts and calls of tourists who wave frenetically from the deck of the Intrepid at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in Manhattan. As the paddlers battle uptown against the current and pull up alongside the Intrepid for a midmorning stretch session, curious onlookers on the hulking aircraft carrier show increasingly noisy interest. They are finally greeted with a wave and a hello from the club's president, Di Eckerle, who rides in the six-person canoe's rear steersman's seat. A cheer goes up in reply, and Ms. Eckerle smiles. ''Only in New York,'' she says. Though Manhattan's waterfront is an unlikely place to find a thriving outrigger canoe scene set as it is on a river whose obstacles include bobbing baseballs and soda cans, swells from the Circle Line ferries and gusts from choppers taking off and landing at the West 30th Street heliport the club is a sign of the sport's growing popularity outside Hawaii. It is just one of close to 30 clubs in the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association, which was formed seven years ago. Besides Manhattan, outrigger clubs are found in unlikely spots like Massachusetts and Texas, as well as several West Coast places where the mild climate and proximity to Hawaii make for a firmly established Hawaiian transplant community.

Watch summer races, or join a club EVERY 20 TO 30 minutes during an outrigger race, three of the six paddlers roll out of the speeding canoe and into the middle of the ocean. Their replacements, having just taken to the water from a chase boat, pull themselves into the moving canoe and resume the race. Good crews can complete this maneuver in 4 seconds. Team members will execute this move several times in a race, and will paddle a total of 3 hours in longer competitions. "If anyone had told me I would be doing all that, I would have thought they were crazy," says Mitch Mathews, who did in fact participate in just such a race only a few months after getting involved with the Lanakila Outrigger Canoe Club of Redondo Beach. "I was 36, and 40 pounds overweight. Now I've discovered I was a latent jock," he says. Mathews is not alone in preaching the outrigger gospel. Imported from Hawaii about 30 years ago, canoe racing has become one of California's fastest-growing sports. Clubs encourage beginners of all ages, men and women, to learn the sport. Or you can just go out and watch a race to see what the outrigger scene is all about.

About Outrigger Canoeing
An outrigger canoe is the most stable boat that you could paddle! You can step into this canoe with confidence, knowing that you will stay dry and steady! The canoe here at the Genesee Waterways Center has two hulls that are connected together and looks similar to a
catamaran, which is what makes the boat so stable. A trained steersperson is always in the boat and is responsible for helping you into the boat, steering and directing the canoe, and docking safely. You get to paddle and enjoy the scenery of our beautiful waterways! The GWC, in collaboration with SportsNet , a program of the Rochester Rehabilitation Center, also offers recreational, fitness, and competitive outrigger canoe programs for individuals of all abilities. Adapted equipment is available, including modified paddles and seats; we adjust to meet the needs of the individual. We also have a mechanical Hoyer lift on the dock to assist with getting in and out of the boat.

5 Things You Need to Know About Sea Canoeing
Sea canoeing, sometimes called ocean canoeing, has been in the tradition of ocean exploring and island hopping peoples for centuries. They crafted early sea canoes out of a single log that was carved out and then treated with natural resins. Native Americans explored the coasts in sea canoes made out of cedar, which, they found, were sturdy enough to face the choppy waves and rollers of the oceans. Similarly, Hawaii's watermen are famous for their multi-hulled outrigger canoes that can navigate swells at relatively high speeds to bounce... Read More

Adventurer: Outrigger Canoeing
On a balmy Saturday morning, it's practice as usual for the New York Outrigger Club.
"Only in New York," she says.
The nonprofit New York Outrigger Club, founded in 1996 by Roger Meyer, launches its canoes from Pier 63, at 23rd Street and the Hudson near Chelsea Piers. The season runs from April to October, and practices are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings, which is when beginners can receive formal instruction.
"It's wonderful to see Manhattan from another point of view," said Ilana Lobet, 53, an Upper West Side resident who owns a custom-framing business. She began paddling in 2002 as a way to train for the Eco-Challenge adventure race in Fiji. "I've lived here since 1976. Out on the water, the scene is always different."

The 2341 Mile Challenge
In June 2007 a team of three paddlers from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire will attempt to canoe the 2341 miles of the Mississippi River in the USA. The adventure will be undertaken for personal challenges and to raise funds for Spinal Research in the United Kingdom. The Mississippi River runs from Lake Itasca, Minnesota near the Canadian border, all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana in the south of the USA. It passes through 10 states to it's end at the Gulf of Mexico.
There will be many challenges along the way. One of the team is a para -plegic, paralysed from the chest down. There will be many issues regarding accessibility and skin related problems associated with a spinal cord injury. Apart from the arduous 35 mile a day average which the team intends to paddle there will be a number of other challenges en route. These include the climate, the wildlife (Bears, Wolves, Snakes and Alligators) and the amount of large river traffic associated with one of the busiest rivers in the world! The team will use a new Wenonah model of canoe, called The Seneca. It is a versatile 3-man Canadian type canoe, extremely suited to 3-man paddling and trips of this type. There are many towns and cities along the way where they will be able to re-supply food and water. They will carry all of their personal kit, camping kit and Dan's medical supplies with wheelchair on top!
