Pankration
By JOANNE KORTH Published August 8, 2004 Click to view related Combat Sports graphic. "The pankratiasts, my boy, practice a dangerous brand of wrestling. They have to endure black eyes ... and learn holds by which one who has fallen can still win, and they must be skillful in various ways of strangulation. They bend ankles and twist arms and throw punches and jump on their opponents." - Philostratos, On Gymnastics , second to third century A.D. THE EVENT The pankration, a form of extreme wrestling, was the last of the combat sports and among the last of all ancient sports to join the Olympic program. While it might seem the most violent Greek sport, the Greeks considered boxing more dangerous. If a man was entered in both events, he asked for the pankration to be scheduled first so he would not be worn out for boxing. Like other combat sports, pankration had no weight classes, rounds or time limit. A victor was declared when one man admitted defeat by raising an index finger. Bouts began with both men standing but quickly gave way to ground wrestling. The genitals were not off limits. Only biting and eye gouging were against the rules, though there is evidence pankratiasts frequently tried to get away with both.

PANKRATION is a World Heritage MARTIAL ART , with a unique distinction of being the only Martial Sport in existence today that can legitimately trace its roots to the Ancient Olympic Games from 648 BC to 393 AD . It is also the ONLY modern day martial sport with a recorded history spanning well back to over 3,000 years. The oldest written evidence of Pankration can be found in the 586 th lyric of Orfica in the ancient poem " Argonautica ", which researchers believe dates as far back as the 12th Millennium BC .
The oldest Pankration relic is an ancient horn, found in Agia Triade Crete, depicted with pictures of ancient Pankration athletes, dating back to the 17th Century BC . In the Souidas , the Oldest Dictionary known to man, PANKRATION is defined as an unarmed combat training art and the PANKRATIASTIS is defined as one who fights with both hands and feet. The name PANKRATION is derived from the Greek words, PAN and KRATOS , meaning ALL POWER
or or According to Plutarch , the martial art of Pankration was created by Theseus , the ancient Greek mythical warrior ,who used Pankration techniques to defeat the Minotaur (a beast that was half man and half bull). However according

Categorized in Pankration Martial Arts, Country of Origin Tags: Greece Pankration is an ancient sport and a martial art introduced in the Greek Olympic games in 648 BC. Many historians believe that although pankration was not one of the first Olympic sports, it was likely one of the most popular. Some also argue it to be the first all-encompassing fighting system in human history. This is a strongly debated issue in the academic community. The ropalon (club) and lion skin armor would also become symbolic among Hellenic warriors due to the famed feats of Hercules. It had numerous forms such as katō pankration, in which the athletes could fall to the ground and continue the match, and anō pankration, in which athletes had to remain standing throughout the match. Elements: Joint locks and choke holds were common techniques of accomplishing this. In fact, there were only two rules: contestants were not allowed to gouge eyes or to bite. There were no weight divisions and no time limits. Referees were armed with stout rods or switches to enforce the rules against biting and gouging. The contest itself continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants either surrendered, suffered unconsciousness, or was killed. Although knockouts were common, most pankration battles were decided on the ground where both striking and submission techniques would freely come into play.

Embedded Video: The word PANKRATION is a Greek word which translated means "all powers - all strength." The Pankration was a sporting event in the ancient Greek Olympic games that was first introduced in 648 BC. The rules of the sport were simple, no biting or eye gouging and victory was secured through knockout, submission or death. The historical records of the early Pankration are shrouded and mixed with Greek mythology. History is unclear as to whether or not these accounts of championship bouts and feats of strength of the champions were myth or actual accounts. What is known is that just like the boxers and wrestlers of the Olympic games the Pankration competitors refined their skills for many generations through hundreds of years. The athletes became extremely proficient at all elements of their sport, including ground fighting and submission holds, to standing fighting with all types of strikes. Many of the holds, throws and striking techniques can be seen on the pottery, statues and drawings of those times. THE INSTRUCTORS ANCIENT PANKRATION MODERN PANKRATION PACHIVAS PANKRATION ... A combination of wrestling and boxing already practised as sports by the ancient Greeks, Pankration was added to the Olympic Games in 648 B.C. In order to force their opponents to concede defeat, the Pankration artist uses punches, kicks, grabs, throws, joint-locks, and chokes. Ground fighting is a large part of training. Because of its early date, Pankration is considered by some authorities to be the first true martial art. Also, because Alexander the Great's armies carried the sport with them across the Alps into Asia, and because of the similarities of basic techniques, a number of authorities are of the opinion that the Asian martial arts were based on Pankration, though no other evidence exists to support this. Similar Styles: Mu Tau - a modern version of Pankration.

Pankration
Pankration, from the Greek words "Pan" and "Kratos" meaning "the one who controls everything", is a world heritage martial art with the unique distinction of being the only martial sport in existence today that can legitimately trace its roots to the ancient Olympic Games from 648 BC to 393 AD. Today, pankration is developed by FILA as a mild form of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
When including pankration into its field of activities, FILA had the vision to encourage the perpetuation of this ancient form of total combat from which all forms of modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) descend. If in ancient times very few limitations were put upon the discipline, today's pankration is thoroughly regulated and can be practiced as a mild and safe introduction to MMA. The head not being a target and the additional protection brought by the uniform make pankration an ideal omni-directional martial art for all. Even though allowing all grappling techniques, such as throws, locks, and chokes, pankration is more focused on the striking arts by awarding points for punches and kicks, both in standing position and on the ground. However, points for dominant control positions are not awarded in order to favor a faster paced style of combat. Pankration is practiced with a Gi or endyma (traditional uniform consisting in lose jacket and pants) along with approved protection gear including specially gel-filled gloves and shin pads.
Another interesting aspect of the sport are the choreographic team events that can be showcased with or without weapons. "Palaismata" takes place between two athletes and aims at assessing their level of knowledge, as well as their coach's work in the gymnasium. "Polydamas" takes place between 1 defendant and 3 attackers and was created in memory of the ancient Olympic winner Polydamas from Skotoussa who, naked and unarmed, annihilated three armed security guards of the Persian King Darious Ochos called the "Immortals".

Where is Pankration?
Pankration matches are held in one of four special battlecages located in an area of Whitegate known as the Pit. A Pankration official near the Pit entrance can instantly teleport adventurers to any of the cages for the low, low price of...nothing.
*Please note that a tax of 10% will be placed on any bazaars held within the Pit.
How Much is Pankration?
Pankration would be free...if the word ‘free’ meant ‘requiring monetary funds.’ Unfortunately, that is not the case. Pankration participation requires a special type of currency known as ‘jettons.’ Jettons can be earned by participating in matches or can be bought with Imperial currency. Speak with Zandjarl near the Pit entrance for details.
