    • What is the History of Pole Vaulting? The concept of pole vaulting has been around for hundreds of years, although it was a bit different than the sport we know today. The first recorded competition took place in the 1700s and in 1850 the sport began to resemble the modern version of pole vaulting. Pole Vaulting Tips Pole vaulting is a track and field event most popularly recognized in the Summer Olympic Games, where men have been competing since 1896 and women since 2000. The objective is to use a pole, usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and measuring anywhere between 10 feet and 17 feet, to vault over a horizontal bar. Pole vaulting is a... Origins of Pole Vaulting The sophisticated fiberglass poles and padded pits of modern-day pole vaulting make it difficult to envision the sport's more humble origins. The strategic planting of sticks, spears and poles, however, was a skill perfected by societies both ancient and medieval. The technique was commonly used to travel over rough terrain and to... In pole vaulting, the athlete, gripping a flexing fiberglass pole with both hands, must propel herself into the air feet-first, twist over a crossbar set at the height of a small two-story building, then fall safely into the cushioned landing pit. Doing this in one smooth-flowing motion takes a rare combination of speed, strength and...

The art of pole vaulting has so many articles and books written from beginners to master vaulters. It is safe to say that pretty much all generally say the same thing: the run, the pole carry, the plant, the drive, the swing, the turn around and the release. I would like to start on the preparation for pole vaulting. So many styles and techniques require different approaches to train for each. If a vaulter has weakness in a phase, there are drills to correct and improve. A vaulter must be mentally and physically ready. We must educate what to expect and what is required to achieve such goals. The highs and lows that will accompany this sport. In the past I have found to get the body ready for pole vaulting requires many repetitions of basic drills like running with and without the pole. The key is how well you run and carry the pole down the run way. Proper posture, tall and proud, high knee with a strong contact with the ground to feel your hip move down the runway. A strong stride without reaching for each step. There are many drills to accomplish this: 20,40, 60, 80 yd sprints. Then there is the billed up sprints 100 and 150’s . Again, what are you trying to accomplish "Form running", speed or quickness?

POLE-VAULTING, the art of springing over an obstacle with the aid of a pole or staff. It is probable that an exercise of the kind was a feature of Greek gymnastics, but with this exception there is no record of its ancient practice as a sport . As a practical means of passing over such natural obstacles as canals and brooks it has been made use of in many parts of the world, for instance in the marshy provinces along the North Sea and the great level of the fens of Cambridgeshire Huntingdonshire Lincolnshire and Norfolk . The artificial draining of these marshes brought into existence a network of open drains or canals intersecting each other at right angles. In order to cross these dryshod, and at the same time avoid tedious roundabout journeys over the bridges , a stack of jumping poles was kept at every house, which were commonly used for vaulting over the canals. As a sport, pole-vaulting made its appearance in Germany in the first part of the 19th century, when it was added to the gymnastic exercises of the Turner by Johann C. F. GutsMuths and Frederich L. Jahn. In Great

Standardization News Search Tech News Standards for Pole Vaulting It happens all the time. Accidents occur and solutions are proposed, but all too often a small group of volunteers must push the limits of their resources to bring about needed improvement. So it is with the stakeholders (literally) of active or experienced pole vaulters on a new ASTM task force. The group includes an orthopedic surgeon, a bronze-medal Olympian, an MIT biomechanic, equipment specialists, trainers, and others who are funding studies to support the development of voluntary consensus standards for pole vaulting. Part of ASTM Committee on Sports Equipment and Facilities, the group operates in Subcommittee F08.52 on Miscellaneous Playing Surfaces. Today, highly breakable fiberglass poles are the norm. One vaulter related an episode where, enroute to a meet, he retrieved broken poles from airport baggage. The poles pose both performance and safety issues and the task force is considering the following:
Industry and federation participation in this activity is invited. The group meets June 21-23 in Eugene, Ore., at the USATF National Championships.

That ties him with teammate Jon Bednarz who also cleared a personal best 13'3 for second highest jumping the league this season. Bednarz is now just six inches off the sophomore school record set in 2001 by Gavin McMahon '03. Darren Traynor, after clearing 11'9 had three good attempts at 12'3.
