QUOITS (0. Fr. coiter, quoiter, to incite), a pastime resembling the ancient discus -throwing which formed one of the five games of the Greek pentathlon (see Discus), the two main differences between the ancient and modern sports being that the quoit is ring-shaped (one surface being rounded, the other - the back - being flat) and is lighter than the discus, and its throwing is a test rather of accuracy than strength. Few traces of a game resembling quoits can be found on the continent of Europe , and its origin may be sought for on the borderland of Scotland and England . There are references to it in the Midlands dating from the beginning of the ,5th century, and it was one of the games prohibited in the reigns of Edward III . and Richard II . in favour of archery . Ascham, in his Toxophilus (1545), says that "quoiting be too vile for scholars," and in old times it was chiefly played by the working classes, who often used horseshoes for want of quoits, a custom still prevailing in country districts. According to the modern rules, slightly modified from the code drawn up in 1869, two iron or steel pins 18 yds. apart are driven into the ground, leaving i in. exposed. Each is situated in the centre of an "end," a circle of stiff

The traditional game of Quoits has a long history. The old game, still played in certain British pubs, uses steel quoits that are thrown at metal pins embedded in beds of soft clay. During the last couple of centuries, various indoor versions of quoits appeared. We have Deck Quoits, popular on cruise liners from the early 1900s, Evesham Quoits - a pub game which is a miniaturised version of the outdoor sport as well as the great old game of Rings. Rubber Quoits and Slate Quoit Boards www.quoits.info HOME BACK www.quoitpits.com Lehigh Valley Slate Belt Quoits is a version of quoits unique to the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania, around Allentown and Bethlehem. A large amount of naturally-occurring slate is found in the the geology of the area, so this is one example of a game that originated from local geological influences. Slate Quoit boards have their origins in Italy, where marble and slate quarries abound. Italian immigrants moved into the Lehigh Valley area and began to mine the slate deposits there, bringing their version of quoits with them. Several local slate quarries manufacture the boards right out of the quarry, and supply them to local sporting goods stores. A set of four rubber quoits can also be purchased separately without the boards, for those who want to throw quoits indoors or don't want to pitch heavy metal quoits outdoors or around children. Slate boards are very heavy and expensive. Each board is made from a single slab of slate, 24 inches square and one inch thick, and weigh 50 pounds a piece. I've been informed that pricing is $80+ for a set of four rubber quoits, and $200+ for a pair of boards. Because of the size and weight of the boards, shipping can be very expensive, running as high as $100 depending on their destination. It would probably be best to pick these up in person!

Quoits
Last updated: 07 August 2006 Caersws has a long tradition of playing the ancient game of quoits. Records show the sport being played here as far back as the nineteenth century. Local resident Linda Evans is an expert on the history.
"According to www.britannia.com The ancient game had died out in Mid Wales when, in the early 1970s after a holiday in Scotland where he saw the game being played, Bernard Jones of Caersws brought the idea back to Montgomeryshire where the interest was re-kindled. As well as Caersws, the villages of Tregynon, Llandyssil which boasted an A and B team, Bwlchyffridd, Bettws, and New Mills were also members of the Montgomeryshire County Quoiting League. Caersws became a very popular venue on the quoiting calendar, largely due to a contingency of Scots who, in addition to the bi-annual journey south for the Internationals, in 1979, began making an annual visit to Caersws for the first Saturday in July which was traditionally the day Caersws hosted its Grand Prix competition.

Records show that the pitches in Beck Hole were in their present position in the year 1882. It's thought they were most likely laid by the landlord of the then Lord Nelson Inn for the entertainment of his local customers and the influx of workmen engaged in the construction of Randymere Reservoir. The Lord Nelson Inn was the headquarters of the club until it was closed in 1940 when it transferred to it's current base at the Birch Hall Inn. Quoits are typically comprised of large standing stones supporting a heavy capstone. The dimensions of these stones meant that the weight was immense, requiring many people to be involved in their construction. These structures must have had great importance. Quoits is the term used in Cornwall but they are also know as dolmens or cromlechs. Quoits were probably covered by a mound. The soil has been removed over the millennium via natural processes or robbed of stone by man. For effect, the capstone may have been left showing above the mound, together with an entrance for religious ceremonies. There are some quoits, eg. Chun Quoit, that do not seem to have been built for the purpose of entering the chamber. These have the supporting stones set in a closed box format.

What is Quoits?
What is Quoits?
Quoits has its roots in an even earlier English pub game; the throwing of horseshoes at a pin in the ground and by the 15th Century had become a well organized sport. Originally, players used an iron quoit which weighed about a pound. In the outdoor version, the quoits were thrown at a stake or "hob" in the center of a clay bed which was kept moist, the quoits being embedded sideways into the clay. An indoor version which was popular in the North West of England during the 1930s also developed, whereby rings were thrown at numbered hooks on a board. There aren't many Quoits games going on in Twin Mountain, But we'll set up a pin for you somewhere, if you really want to try it! Twin Mountain

We publish free game rules in order to promote game playing around the world. To find out more, visit the website www.mastersgames.com or email custserv@mastersgames.com Masters Traditional Games . The on the Masters Traditional Games website applies. Steel quoits is a game probably derived from the ancient martial sport of Discus throwing. Being a traditional pub game without any national or international governing body, variations of equipment and rules abound. Where there is doubt, the locally played rules should always apply. These rules are merely this author's interpretation of the most popular and traditional games being played today as follows: the venerable Long Game as played in Scotland and Wales, the East Anglian game now confined to tiny pockets around North Suffolk, the traditional Northern game played in the North of England. Also included are the more modern adaptations Slate bed quoits from Pennsylvania, USA, Deck Quoits born in the 1930s and Sward Quoits included for people who wish to play Quoits informally in their garden or elsewhere outdoors. These rules are comprehensive instructions for friendly play. They are not a complete set of standard regulations encompassing all situations that might be encountered. If in doubt, players should always abide by locally-played or house rules.
