  • Linda Evans from Caersws is Joint Secretary of the Welsh Quoiting Board. She was at the Annual Quoits International between Wales and Scotland on 26 July 2003 and sent us this report. "There are minutes of the Montgomeryshire County Quoiting League dating date back as far as 1924. Montgomeryshire County Quoits League was established comprising the six villages of Tregynon, Llandyssil which boasted an A and B team, Bwlchyffridd, Bettws, Caersws, New Mills. The County Quoiting League in Montgomeryshire was still running at least until 1950. The annual quoits international between Wales and Scotland, held at Felinfach near Lampeter on Saturday 26 July, was won by Wales who beat Scotland by 202 points to 111.

    How to Play Quoits
By an eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? To play the game of quoits, you use metal rings and stakes. The game is one of precision, hand-eye coordination and muscle development since the rings weigh about 3 lbs. each. Quoits resembles horseshoes in many ways and is a great game to add to your next family picnic. Difficulty: Moderate
    Instructions
    Things You'll Need:
    • Large outside area 2 hobs, or stakes Quoits
Set up the quoits area. When you play the game of quoits you need to drive hobs, stakes, into the ground at a distance of 54 feet from each other. The hobs are the target for the rings. Buy enough rings for everyone. Each player gets to shoot two quoits, or metal rings, at the hobs on the other side. The quoits are circles with an interior hole 4 inches in diameter and a lip that's 2 inches wide. The players alternate throws at the hob. Toss the rings at one hob first. When you play quoits, focus on pitching to one hob at a time. All players stand behind the opposite hob and throw 2 quoits during their turn.

Game of the Month: Quoits, Dobblers and Horseshoes
    by Dagonell
The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association says that the game of horseshoes dates back to the Roman empire. While modern play sets may never have been near a horse, actual horseshoes were used in tournament play right up until 1909. The game may have started with blacksmith's children playing with old worn out and cast off shoes. Quoits is played with fully closed rings, slightly concave on top and slightly convex on the bottom. Horseshoes is played with U-shaped open rings. The Encyclopedia Britannica states that modern quoits evolved from the Greek throwing of the discus. Timothy Finn, the author of Pub Games of England disagrees with that saying that it reflects the author's "scholarly absorption with the classical past." I tend to agree. The discus is a contest of sheer distance, quoits has a fixed distance and is a competition for accuracy. The rules for quoits and horseshoes are virtually identical, only the shape of the projectile is different. While we tend to think of all horseshoes being U-shaped, this is not the case. Some horseshoes are closed rings, either to better conform to a specific breed of horse or to help protect a hoof injury. I speak from experience, I spent a summer apprenticed to a mundane blacksmith. In some parts of England, quoits are still referred to as "shoes", and horseshoes are thought of as the "rustic" version of quoits. In 1337, war with France was all but imminent. Edward III passed an edict declaring all sports and leisure activities except archery to be unlawful. It was hoped that this would encourage Englishmen to spend more time practicing with the longbow. While quoits was not specifically mentioned then, it was listed as an 'inportune game' in a similar edict by Richard II in 1388. While the actual law wasn't repealed until James I took the throne in the early 17th century, we know that the game was still played.

    Indoor Quoits
While two versions of Outdoor Quoits have managed to make it through the trials of the late 20th century, an indoor version of the game has also managed to thrive around the debatable border between Wales and England. The heart of indoor quoits beats loudest in pubs around Powys, Wales and Evesham, England but it is also popular in Gloucestershire, Worcester and Hereford in England. The history of Indoor Quoits, Evesham Quoits, Table Quoits or Dobbers is not at all clear but the best guess seems to be that somebody decided to invent an indoor version of the outdoor game towards the end of the nineteenth century. The board shown is from the author's collection.
