A s seen on KING-TV's Northwest Backroads, Sunday April 23, 2000 A Brief History of Railbiking R esearch shows that railbiking has been around nearly as long as railroads and bicycles. A railbike patent in the U.S. Patent Office database is dated 1869. Scores of patents for railbike systems were filed between 1880 and 1920 around the world. R ailbikes were once used by railroad companies for track checking, moving workers at work sites as well as going for assistance when the locomotives broke down. Telegraph companies also used railbikes to maintain telegraph lines that often followed railways. In the Midwest and other regions with sufficient winds, workers using railbikes sometimes put up sails to power them along the tracks. L ike its contemporary, the bicycle, railbike design went into decline with the advent of the internal combustion engine and the automobile. A few independently minded designers and tinkerers kept the concept alive for the last 90 years and today there is a resurgence of interest in railbiking.

Railbiking ongoing tinkering and exploring, begun 2004 A quiet and humble underground of home-spun inventors have been experimenting with different ways to put a bicycle on an abandoned railroad for years, and I am merely an upstart with a lot to learn. Many elements of this project are in line with the same motivations behind much of my other work- that of blurring the lines between what is allowed and what is illicit in terms of property, borders, and land use. This design, made from an old three-speed cruiser that my friend and I found on the street in front of our house, uses a lifting wheel-guide and outrigger attachment designed by Richard Bentley . Much of the work on the bicycle itself was done at Free Ride! , a bike recycling collective in Pittsburgh with which I am a coordinator.

    Railbiking the Carrizo Gorge
I recently took railbike trip on the former San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railroad into the Carrizo Gorge. The line is currently embargoed east of Jacumba because of bridge conditions, so this gave me the perfect opportunity to ride the line. This trip was in late January, 2009.
A look at how the railbike works; a front wheel is guided along the rail by flanges and a powerful magnet. This keeps the front wheel of the bike on the rails. An outrigger hold wheels against the opposite rail and holds the bike vertical . Then the rear wheel follows the front wheel, tracking independently on the rail.
    Here's the front wheel.
At speed, you can see how the front wheel tracks on the rail.
    Heading Into the Gorge
Starting the trip in Jacumba , the valley is pretty wide and flat. The line turns northward, away from the Mexican border and begins the descent along Carrizo Creek.
The first crossing of Carrizo Creek. You can see that some work has recently been done on this trestle.

A railbike is a street bike or mountain bike fitted with special attachments that allow it to ride directly on railroad tracks Is it difficult?
No! Railbiking is easy and fun!
There is no balancing or steering required; almost anyone can ride a railbike
    Who railbikes?
    What about trains?
Railbike Tours, Inc. is conducting tours on track controlled by the City of Tacoma through a special agreement. This section of rail is not used by Tacoma Rail at this time. Why railbike?
Riding one is like gliding on a very smooth surface. There is almost no traffic to contend with. You see scenery that is often not accessible by road. Traveling through forest and farmland, railbikes are so quiet wildlife often doesn't know you are there! Where and how can I buy a railbike?

    Railbike adventure, ho!
The railbike odyssey continues. I finally decided the test tracks at Wallace and L Streets in Bozeman were destroying my bike. Sure, the first couple of times it was important for me to take care of some necessary tweaking, but after repairing the thing time and time again I finally realized that I was dealing with the worst set of railroad tracks in the state of Montana.
So, onto bigger and better things. Was my bike ready? Who knows. It wasn't ready to take another beating at the test tracks, that's for sure. I had originally considered riding the abandoned line from Wilsall to Livingston, but after a bit of research I realized I'd have permission issues with some of the landowners along the rail line. I needed a place without such constrictions, preferably on National Forest or BLM land. I needed... Homestake Pass.
Here's where Montanans take a deep breath, look at me dubiously, and mutter, "Wow." Homestake Pass is the route I-90 takes over the Continental Divide to Butte, Montana. It's known for steepness and treachery.
The rails running alonside it, however, aren't steep at all. After all, it's rare that any railroad has more than a three percent grade, Homestake included. It takes a big, swooping northward turn before coming back toward the interstate, making the pass in double the distance. Plus, the rails were gorgeous compared to the test tracks: straight, gleaming, clean, and totally gap-free. If it weren't for the large sage and juniper bushes growing up between the rails, it might even be fun.
