The Tennis Bookshop philosophy is that only very good condition books are acceptable to my customers, and even now, I stock no titles published after 1930 that are not in their original dust-wrappers. Whereas in the early days from 1988, I issued occasional lengthy catalogues, for the last few years I have promoted the business by the issue of Newsletters (68 so far), many of which can be found in the archive section. With the enormous growth of the Internet over the last few years, it is hardly surprising that the considerable bulk of my business is now done by e-mail.

          Rules
Edit The rules of real tennis have not changed for centuries. Stripped of its special rules for serving and chases, the game is simple to understand. Each player strives to get the ball over the net and in doing so may use any wall - as in squash. The scoring is the same as in lawn tennis (15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage), except that the score of the winner of the last point, and not that of the server, is called first. The first player to win 6 games wins a set. So, if the score is five games all, there is a final deciding game. At the conclusion of each game, the winner of that game has his or her score called first. As in lawn tennis, singles or doubles can be played. The length of a real tennis court is approximately one and a half times the length of a lawn tennis court: its width a fraction more than the width of a doubles lawn tennis court. Halfway between the two ends a net stretches from side to side of the court. In the centre the height of the net is the same as a lawn tennis net. At either end the net is higher, in fact, five feet. The origins of tennis being French, various features of a tennis court are still known by their original French names. Thus the long opening at the end of the service side of the court (behind which spectators can sit and watch a game) is known as the Dedans. At the opposite end of the court the buttress projecting from the wall is known as the tambour and the wooden opening near it is called the grille.

          Rackets
Edit Real Tennis rackets are hand-crafted in wood by two companies: Grays of Cambridge (UK) and Harrow Sports (US) based in Denver, CO. Grays has been making real tennis rackets since the 19th century and today their rackets are made in their factory outside of Cambridge by 4 employees who have loyally worked for Grays over many decades. Harrow Sports, founded in 2000, has picked-up the mantle from Bancroft (former manufacturers of court tennis rackets for most of the 20th century) and have been making real tennis rackets since 2006 in their factory based in Pakistan. Real tennis rackets are required by the laws of the game to be made “almost entirely of wood”. At Grays they are made from Willow staves and loops of Ash. The racket may be strengthened further (and made more rigid) by adding up to three layers of leatheroid vulcanised fibre, which is extremely strong. Some players believe that it is graphite, but it is in fact made from paper (which is made from wood and therefore complies with the rules regarding rackets). Similarly, Harrow's rackets are made of Ash with thin layers of fibre in the head and throat. Harrow make three models: The white Pro (standard racket), the black Elite (with more layers of fibre for strength relative to weight) and the top of the range red Camden Riviere Autograph (with greater weight and reinforcement in the throat).

Real Tennis Real tennis is the original racket sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis is descended and only a small number of active courts still remain in the United Kingdom, Australia, United States and France. One of these courts forms the centre piece of our sports club. The game combines elements of Lawn Tennis and Squash, but in addition the court has various target areas, sloping roof sections along three of its walls (called penthouses), and some unusual features within the scoring system. These elements combine to ensure both a physical and intellectual challenge quite unlike that of any other racket game. At Seacourt we have a busy calendar of annual Real Tennis tournaments and competitions for members. In addition we regullarly play host to some of the world's top players in competitions such as the National League, Ladies Open and the Seacourt Silver Racquet. We have full time professionals available for group or individual lessons throughout the week. Come along and find out more about this unique sport - but be prepared to get hooked! The Real Tennis court at Seacourt has been entertaining enthusiasts since 1911.

    Super Real Tennis Review
Super Real Tennis is so accomplished in terms of presentation and gameplay that it almost seems unfair to compare it to the current mobile gaming offerings in the US. Up till now, mobile gaming has existed on a different plane from gaming on most other mainstream platforms. Because of the format and the accepted economic model that mobile gaming operates on, the expected scope of a mobile game is usually pretty small. However, Sega has just raised the bar with Super Real Tennis, which is one of the most playable mobile offerings we've seenas well as one of the best-looking. This is a mobile tour-de-force that feels more like a full-fledged modern console game than something that should appear on a cell phone. Can you believe you're playing this on a mobile phone?

game of tennis is the same everywhere. The name given to the game differs in different countries. In Great Britain it is called Tennis or, to distinguish it from Lawn Tennis, Real Tennis or Royal Tennis. In the USA it is called Court Tennis: in France Jeu de Paume (hand ball): and in Australia Royal Tennis. The various names throw light on the development of the game. Tennis wasy played in 5th century Tuscany when villagers used to strike balls up and down the streets with bare hands.
In Great Britain, as in France, royal patronage ensured the continued popularity of the game. French Kings in the 16th century and Stuart Kings in the 17th century were enthusiastic players. George IV (1763-1830), Prince Albert (1819-1861) - there is a locker in the changing room at Hampton Court Palace which still bears his name - Edward VII (1842-1910) and George V (1866-1936) have all supported the game.
Lawn Tennis, which derived from Real Tennis in about 1874, is played on a marked-out surface without side or end walls. Court Tennis, to use the American name for Tennis, indicates that Tennis is played in a specially court with walls on four sides.

TENNIS AND HOW IT GAVE BIRTH TO LAWN TENNIS The game of Real Tennis (hereafter referred to as Tennis) gave birth to the newcomer called Lawn Tennis, which was officially born in early 1874. The reality is that a form of outside tennis (or Lawn Tennis) was being played in England at least 75 years earlier. And the old outside game of Longue Paume has been played in north-east France, probably for 200 years. To view the current listings of Real Tennis books and news please click here Very few people play Tennis, mostly because there are only forty-five or so active courts in the world, to be found in Australia, France (where it is called Le Jeu de Paume or more accurately Court Paume), the Eastern Seaboard of the United States (where it is called Court Tennis), and Great Britain (where it is called Real Tennis, or usually Tennis). It is likely that fewer than 10,000 people play the game worldwide, and I am one of those at the top end of the keener players, though only in enthusiasm rather than effectiveness! The scoring system in Tennis is similar to that in Lawn Tennis (thus 15, 30, 40, game), but the game is also managed with the use of lines upon the floor called Chases and a range of openings called Penthouse Galleries down the side-wall, also called Chases. Each line and each opening has a differing value and significance to the progress of the game, and these values and significances can really only be fully understood as a player gains experience. Another major difference from Lawn Tennis is that in Tennis, no set progresses beyond 11 games; at 5-all, the winner of the 11th game wins the set.
