Welcome to Hatfield House Tennis Club
The Club plays Real Tennis on the historic court at Hatfield House. The court was built by the 2nd Marquess of Salisbury in 1842 and for nearly 100 years play was restricted to family members and their guests. In 1955, the 5th Marquess gave permission for local players to found a private club, which in 1995 was converted to a Company Limited by Guarantee. The Club is now thriving with over 250 members in various categories and engages two full time professionals. The court is in use on average for 10 hours a day throughout the year for both singles and doubles play. Its activities include friendly matches with other clubs, internal tournaments, club nights and social events. Apart from this the Club hosts 4 or 5 National Tournaments each year and has competed with distinction in various divisions of the National League. The Club has also been successful in the inter-club championships for the Field Trophy and Brodie Cup without actually winning either event, all of which goes to make Hatfield House Tennis Club one of the most vigorous Real Tennis Clubs in the country. If you are interested in finding out more about the game, watching it, or giving it a try, come and talk to us. Visitors and potential new members are always very welcome.

http://web.mac.com/withersglobal/iWeb/History/Introduction.html
The most commonly quoted story of the origin real tennis is that it was first played by monks in monasteries in France, which is a pity, because it’s not true.   While it is known that the medieval clergy did play various forms of handball, forms of handball were played by everyone in the medieval world from peasants to royalty, including the clergy.   It is also questionable whether the game can be said to have originated in France.  It is true that the French played the game and took it to Britain, but the ball games that preceded real tennis were played all over medieval Europe. The development of lawn tennis is well documented and quite straightforward.  In 1873 Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented (it is arguable whether he invented it) a new game.  It was a simplified form of real tennis that could be played on people’s lawns and it was sold in kit form.   In one of the worst implementations of a branding strategy in the history of marketing, he named the game Sphairistikè, which is Greek for “ballgame”.  It soon became known as “lawn tennis” and eventually just “tennis”. In 1877 the All England Club in Wimbledon revised the rules of the game and held the first Lawn Tennis Championships.  The winner of those championships - first Wimbledon champion - was 27 year old Spencer Gore, whose main sports were real tennis and rackets.

REAL TENNIS USA Alfredo Sararo attended Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
    The slice backhand...
Can be a great tool for various reasons. It can be used to approach the net or to keep the ball low to allow time to get into a good center court volley position. It can also be implemented to change the pace during a rally in order to throw off the opponent’s rhythm and force an error or a short ball. It’s also a excellent tool on defense to buy enough time to get out of trouble and back into a point. For all of these reasons, having a slice in your arsenal is a big advantage when you go into battle.
The backhand slice and under spin chips techniques are tricky and requires a precise amount of touch and feel. The traditional grip for a backhand slice would be a continental, but some players should alter this slightly depending on what they feel most comfortable with.
Turn your shoulders and bring the racket up with the hitting surface of the racket open. Be sure that the elbow is bent and you are not too stiff when following through with your slice. This is a common problem and can lead to frustration when trying to learn the slice. From this position swing the racket forward and slightly down to the ball, sliding the face of the racket on the underside the ball.
Making the swing pattern too steep will bounce the ball just short of the net. So, swing more out to the ball. Contact should be slightly forward of your front foot. If you are too early the ball will go straight up in the air and if you are too late the ball will probably sail long or wide. The finish should be with your hand about shoulder high and your racket completely open.
