    History
Although it's quite new as a competitive sport, rhythmic gymnastics is rooted in the very beginning of modern gymnastics. Specifically, it grew out of the Swedish system of free exercise developed in 1814 by Peter Henry Ling. Ling promoted "aesthetic gymnastics," in which students expressed their feelings and emotions through bodily movement. The idea was extended by Catherine E. Beecher, founder of the Western Female Institute in Ohio in 1837. In Beecher's gymnastics program, called "grace without dancing," young women exercised to music, moving from simple calisthenics to more strenuous activities. During the 1880s, Emil Dalcroze of Switzerland developed "eurhythmics," a form of physical training for musicians and dancers, and George Demeny of France created various exercises to music that were designed to promote grace of movement, muscular flexibility, and good posture. All of those strains were combined, around 1900, into the Swedish school of rhythmic gymnastics, which later added more dance elements from Finland. About the same time, Ernest Idla of Estonia established a degree of difficulty for each movement.

    Rhythmic Gymnastics
    BETWEEN ART AND SPORT
    RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS
Rhythmic Gymnastics is an aesthetic discipline falling midway between art and sport. It is practised exclusively by women (although in Japan and some other countries, men also practice the sport) and performed to music while using small hand apparatus - rope, hoop, ball, clubs and/or ribbon. The spectacular appeal of Rhythmic Gymnastics with its grace, harmony and beauty is enormous. At the world class level the difficulty of body movements performed in combination with skilful handling of the apparatus is fascinating. However, learning and developing such skills require as much hard work as in Artistic Gymnastics or any form of dance. In order to get to World class level, a rhythmic gymnast needs natural talent, the ability to handle hard training which will further develop strength, flexibility, jumping abilities, spatial orientation, stamina and handling skills with the apparatus. Finally, Rhythmic Gymnastics is about developing personal style and the ability to get one’s own artistic message and charisma across to the audience.

Young girls who love music and dance, thrive on creativity and originality, and are challenged by complete body and physical skill mastery are drawn to the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. A rhythmic gymnast learns to work with five pieces of hand apparatus: rope, hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon; which in coordination with dance and gymnastics body movements form the foundation of the sport.
Elite Sports Complex has one of the largest Rhythmic Gymnastic programs in the area. See below for our recreational class offerings and information on our competitive team. Junior Jumpers

Enter your search terms Submit search form Web www.eliteRG.com Announcement EliteRG.com started in 1997 as a way to share information amongst parents and friends of Club Elite Rhythmic Gymnastics. Over the years, the website has evolved into a place for the code of points and other discussions. As of 2007, EliteRG.com is officially a non-club oriented website dedicated towards providing resources for the sport and its community. Mission Statement Many people confuses rhythmic gymnastics with artistic gymnastics. Artistics gymnastics uses large equipments like the beam, the parallel bars, the horse, etc. You see lots of flips in artistic gymnastics events. In rhythmic gymnastics, music is an integral part of the routine. Furthermore, the gymnasts manipulates small apparatus like the rope, ball, ribbon, clubs and hoops for women, and rope, stick, double rings and clubs for men. Many think of rhythmic gymnastics only as the sport of rhythmic gymnastics as in the Olympics. However, rhythmic gymnastics can also be used for the family of sports that includes Special Olympics, Aethestic Group Gymnastics, martial gym and men's rhythmic gymnastics - each with their own competition rules. Using the bigger definition opens up new opportunities not available before.
