Artistic roller skating
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Artistic roller skating is a sport similar to figure skating on ice. Within artistic roller skating there are several disciplines: Artistic roller skaters use either quad or inline skates . Generally quad and inline skaters compete in separate events and not against each other. Inline figure skating has been included in the world championships since 2002 in Wuppertal, Germany The sport is very similar to ice figure skating. There is some crossover between the two sports. Ice skaters such as Tara Lipinski and Marina Kielmann competed in both. However, roller figure skating is often mistakenly considered to be more difficult because the ice allows the skater to draw a deep, solid edge to push off from when performing jumps such as a lutz or an axel, however the edge is harder to balance on for beginner skaters, and more complex issues can occur for elite-level skaters. On roller skates it is not possible to use the same kind of deep edge in that context, because it will confuse in the rotation, making it difficult to land properly. On the other hand, roller skates restrict the beginner skater from generating as much speed and therefore result in less jump rotations and spin positions than figure skates do. Yet the smoother and easier to manage floor allows for more acceleration and consistency. Also, the lack of elemental difficulties, as well as having a consistent surface, gives roller skaters an advantage.

    Finding a Roller Skating Rink
The goal here is to put skaters in touch with skating rinks. If you're looking for a rink, click on your state's abbreviation and then click on the rink that looks interesting. With several hundred rinks listed there is probably one close to you. Some of these link to web sites, some to email. We do not own these rinks. Some of them are customers of ours, some are not. This is merely an informational service to help skaters find rinks. If your rink isn't listed here, just email us the details. Include the name of the rink, the city and state, and the website address. Also, if you find a bad link please email us with the details. These things change pretty fast sometimes and we can't keep track of them all without some help. New: if you don't have a traditional web site we can link to your myspace page. Finally, if this is helpful, consider putting a link on your page back to ours ( www.seskate.com ). Thanks. Sign up for our Email Newsletter For Email Newsletters you can trust AL AK AZ AR ... From LoveToKnow 1911
ROLLER- SKATING a pastime which, by the use of small wheels instead of a blade on the skate, has provided some of the pleasures of skating on ice without having ice as the surface (see Skating ). Wheeled skates were used on the roads of Holland as far back as the 18th century, but it was the invention of the four-wheeled skate, working on rubber springs, by J. L. Plimpton of New York , in 1863, that made the amusement popular. Still greater advance was made by the Raymond skate with ball and cone bearings . The wheels or rollers were first of turned boxwood , but the wearing of the edges was a fault which has been surmounted by making them of a hard composition or of steel . The floor of the rink on which the skating takes place is either of asphalt or of wood. The latter is that always used in newly made rinks. The best floors are of long narrow strips of maple . Figure-skating on roller -skates is in some respects easier to learn than on ice-skates, the four points of contact given by the wheels rendering easier the holding of an edge; but some figures, such as loops, are more difficult.

Home Library Miscellaneous Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Recreation and sport in which the participants use roller skates (shoes with sets of wheels attached) to move about on special rinks or paved surfaces. The invention of roller skates is traditionally credited to the Belgian Joseph Merlin in the 1760s, but the first practical four-wheel skate was designed in 1863 by James Plimpton of Medford, Mass. Roller-skating speed events became popular in the early 20th century. Later, team competitions in "roller derbies" on banked tracks became a spectator sport. Other roller-skate contests, such as acrobatics and hockey, followed. In the late 20th century, roller skates gave way to in-line (Rollerblade) skates, in which a single row of wheels is used in place of the standard rectangular configuration. WHAT'S NEW? Recently, the propertry, where The Forum Roller Centre had been located for 22 years, was purchased by a new owner. The Forum closed in its present location on August 31, 2004. At the present time, our office is situated in a warehouse on the North side of Cambridge (Note new address and phone numbers below). We're investigating the many possibilities here, such as a temporary skating facility for the 8 Wheels Rollersports Club or a facility that could also accommodate sessions. A number of issues need to be addressed to accommodate either choice, and we're working on them diligently. We are also moving ahead with planning for a new multi purpose complex. A number of locations in the Cambridge are being pursued, so keep an eye on this web page for further updates. Check back for more new announcements to come.
