History
The earliest historical records describe battles and voyages in which the ships were propelled by oars. There must, of course, have been from time to time friendly trials of speed between these ancient craft, such as that described by Virgil in the fifth book of the Aeneid, but there is no record in classical or even in medieval times of rowing having been indulged in solely as a recreation, or as a means of promoting athletic contest. The absence of any element of competition is sufficient to account for the fact that the boats, the oars, and the method of rowing of the 17th century differed but little from those of the earliest times. The history of Great Britain abounds in instances of the use of the oar. The ancient Britons propelled themselves in coracles of wickerwork covered with skins, by means of paddles rather than oars, but the Saxons were expert oarsmen, as also were the Danish and Norwegian invaders. The Annapolis Rowing Club (ARC) is both a recreational and competitive rowing club serving the Annapolis and surrounding area for more nearly 30 years. With over 100 members, experience ranges from beginner to advanced. ARC offers programs for both novice and experienced oarsmen. The ARC rowing season starts mid-March and ends in November, weather dependent. ARC is a non-profit, community-based membership organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the sport of rowing by providing the widest possible range of opportunities for training and participation.
Congratulations ARC rowers on a successful sprint season! It was action packed with lots of tough races! ARC made a good showing at many regattas this season including Masters Nationals in Camden, NJ and FISA Masters Worlds in Canada this year!

By Kate Stockton To begin the process of seeking out a rowing scholarship at your top choice college it is important to understand the qualities that make up a desirable rowing recruit as well as some helpful tools to help prove that you have what it takes. Listed below are qualities that most coaches would want in their student-athletes. Check off the ones that you think apply to you, and then ask your coach to do the same. If you have more than 10, you are on the right track!

At Karapiro, for the 2010 World Rowing Championships, 12 professional staff and over 600 volunteers, working either full-time or part-time, in 35 different teams, take care of all aspects of this huge event. Competing in the Fours class of the Race alongside three other teams is aptly named Boat No. 24 – All Relative, crewed of four relations from Beer in Devon – brothers, Justin Adkin and Robert Adkin and cousins Martin Adkin and James Green.
With an impressive lead of over 800 miles, All Relative crossed the finish line, due south of Cape Shirley, Antigua today at 1537.47 hours GMT to win this most extreme of endurance events in a total crossing time of 39 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes and 47 seconds.
