  • racket ball girl image by Paul Moore from Fotolia.com Royal tennis is the original ball-and-racket sport and is still played in some countries. Royal tennis, also called "real tennis" or "court tennis," is an indoor racket game and might remind you of squash or racquetball. This version of the ball-and-racket game was the precursor to modern lawn tennis. In the indoor court, players hit the ball over the net, as in lawn tennis; they use any available wall to get it done, as in squash. The game is still played in France, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Scoring
  • Scoring royal tennis is the same as lawn tennis, the 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage system. In royal tennis, however, the order in which scores are called is somewhat different. The score of the winner of the last point, rather than the score of the player serving, is called first. The set is won by the first person or team to win six games
Players win and lose points by making errors, such as hitting the ball into the net or out of the court. Points are also scored by hitting the ball into the winning particular sections of the court (called "openings" and consisting of dedans, grille and winning gallery).
