Sepak Takraw
Sepak Takraw (Kick Volleyball, or just Takraw for short) is a sport native to Southeast Asia, resembling volleyball, except that it uses a rattan ball and only allows players to use their feet and head to touch the ball. A cross between soccer and volleyball, it is a popular sport in Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Indonesia. Played on a badminton doubles-sized court, the game evolved from a hacky sack-type practice, into the aiming of a kick into a high, suspended net. Eventually, competitive takraw developed, pitting teams of players versus each other across a volleyball-type net. Modern competitive takraw allows three players to a team, one to serve, one to gather the ball, and one to deliver the ball at high speed across the net; the killer (like the 'spiker' in volleyball.) Modern contests play to 21 points. In Thailand, the game is simply called Takraw (Thai: , meaning "ball" or "basket"). It is also thuck thay (Lao: "twine" and "kick"), or sepak takraw (Malay: "kick" and "takraw" from Thai) Similar games include bossaball, footbag net, footvolley, jianzi and sipa. Another version of the sport involves the use of bamboo scoops to both toss and catch a ball in a simple game of "catch."

It is even said that in one of his many trips, the merchant Marco Polo brought back to Europe a game from China, which was kicking an implement into the air and counting the number of kicks, a style resembling today's sepaktakraw game.
The oldest form of kicking the traditional woven ball used in the game was for players to stand in a circle and try to keep the ball in the air as long as possible without using their hands or arms. The traditional circle game had no set rules and required very little space - which was important in the jungles of Southeast Asia and the ball was woven out of rattan, which was found in abundance. It provided villagers of all ages with fun, recreation and a sense of shared community. This was the traditional circle game, evolved from many forms of kicking game. Sepaktakraw using the net came about in the 19th century; enthusiasts in Southeast Asia decided to add a net and a set of rules similar to volleyball to make the game more challenging and competitive. An exhibition match was held in Penang, Malaysia in 1945 where it received tremendous response and the game spread like wildfire throughout the rest of the Malaysian Peninsula and Southeast Asia. In 1960, representatives of various South-East Asia nations met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to establish a standard set of rules and regulations for the game. In 1965, two developments occurred which were to change the course of the sport of Sepaktakraw, as it is hitherto known. On December 19, 1965, the sport was officially named Sepaktakraw after heated discussions between Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Laos at the Southeast Asian Peninsula (SEAP) Games Federation meeting.

Introduction Sepak Takraw
Sepak Takraw
(Kick Volleyball), or Takraw for short, is one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in Asia.
It is a cross between soccer and volleyball, played in a doubles badminton court, as three players on each side of a 5-foot high net get three chances to kick, knee, shoulder or head a hand-woven ball back to the opposing team. Like in Volleyball there are passes, sets and spikes - but all without the use of hands or arms!
Being Malaysia's national sport, Sepak Takraw was introduced as a demonstration sport in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpar. It has become an extremely exciting spectator sport that is now spreading world-wide with over 20 countries involved.
The Sepak Takraw Association of Canada STAC ) has been established to organize and govern the sport, here in Canada. The national office is in Regina, where there are experienced players and organizational support. Takraw provides unique recreational activity with cultural roots. ASEC has become Saskatchewan's provincial member of STAC in order to facilitate and promote the spread of this sport throughout our province!
