Pencak Silat Techniques
By Alex Baker eHow Contributor updated: October 5, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Don't kick sand in these guys' faces: Pencak silat in action Pencak Silat Techniques Pencak silat is an Indonesian style of martial arts . Born initially as a weapons-based style, pencak silat borrowed much from the martial arts of neighboring China and India. The end result is a martial arts style that contains a lethal combination of striking, kicking and weapons-based techniques.
The Basics
  • Pencak silat could be called a generic term for all the different styles of Indonesian martial arts. Because of this it's difficult to define what exactly the standard techniques of pencak silat are.
However, a few core principles will give you insight into how pencak silat works. For one, most of the hand and feet techniques are designed to be done either with or without a weapon.

    Malay Silat
Silat as a term encompasses the martial arts styles and forms of the Malaysian peninsula and the Indonesian Archipelago. Silat comes from the term "Si Kilat", which literally means "a person with moves like lightning.". The exact origins of Silat are lost in the mists of antiquity due to the lack of reliable written records. Though it is widely believed that Indonesia, specifically Sumatra, was the cradle of the combat art of Silat.
Studies supported by archeology have shown fighting systems have existed since the 6th century in the Malay Archipelago. The ancient kingdoms of Srivijaya in Sumatra (4th-7th century CE) and Majapahit (13th-16th century CE) have developed deadly Silat skills which was widely taught among its warriors and nobility. Needless to say, Silat helped these empires conquer the neighboring lands of what are now parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Migration and trade with other countries also brought influences to the native Silat styles and systems. The result of these influences can be seen in Indonesian and Malaysian Silat systems; weapons such as the forked truncheon (trisula), Indian grappling/wrestling styles, loose Siamese-influenced garb and curved bladed weapons of the Middle East.
Today, Silat is an inseparable part of Malay culture. Rural areas as well as urban centers have Silat schools. Performances and demonstrations of Silat forms and movements are incorporated into wedding ceremonies, official functions and other performing arts. The Malaysian national organisation for the promotion and development of Silat is The Malaysian National Silat Federation or PESAKA (Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia).

P entjak Silat originated in Indonesia over 2000 years ago. Today it is practiced worldwide and has evolved into hundreds of recognized styles. It was brought to America in the 1960s but has not been marketed and commercialized like Karate or Tae Kwon Do. As a result, Pentjak Silat retains a certain exclusivity as an "exotic" combat art, and one about which there are many misconceptions. I n its purest form, the emphasis is on self-defense rather than sparring or competition. While it is often taught as an open hand combat art, it is fundamentally a weapon based system drawing on the tools of the Indonesian peasant farmer including knives and sticks. Do not be deceived by the graceful, fluid movements - the heart of this art is a highly efficient, calculated system to disrupt an attack and quickly incapacitate the opponent.
T he San Jose, California area now has numerous opportunities for adults and children wanting to learn Pentjak Silat.

    Silat
    Intro:
Pentjak Silat is the Indonesian set of Martial Arts, all with diferent styles and schools (over 400 of them).
    Origin:
    Indonesia.
    History:
Since Silat is an umbrella term covering many styles, it is not possible to give a single history. Some of the arts are very old (1000 years?), and some were developed less than 50 years ago. Also, as with other arts, the history of Silat is somewhat unclear. There is a mixture of indigenous techniques along with techniques borrowed from Chinese Wu Shu and Indian arts such as Kalaripayit.
    Description:
Pentjak Silat depends heavily on an indigenous weapons and animal-styles heritage. In the (distant) past, it was predominately a weapons system; empty hand techniques are derived from the weapons forms. As a weapons system, it was guarded jealously as a royal art; over the centuries, Pentjak Silat became a village art. Techniques are quite varied, although kicks are not emphasized much. Foot work is sophisticated and the development of stability is of major importance. The foot and and hand techniques are so subtle and intricate that they are often taught separately, then integrated after the student has mastered them individually. There is a good balance between offensive and defensive techniques. A great master of Pentjak Silat is referred to as "pendekar." Pendekar describes someone who is not merely a great martial artist; a pendekar has also attained a high level of spiritual development. Senior students are called "guru" by beginning students, and a proficient instructor is called "kang."

Silat - Malaysian Silat - Silat Melayu
    Malaysian Silat
Malaysian Silat or Silat Melayu is said to have developed based on observation and imitation of animals including the monkey, eagle and tiger. Incorporating kicks, punches, takedowns, and weapons, Silat was not intended as a sport. It is a fighting form with only one purpose: subdue (or kill) your enemies. Silat was widely used in the many wars between indigenous tribes of the Malay islands throughout history. When the region was colonized subsequently by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, the practice of silat was outlawed and training was largely done in secret. During Japanese occupation in World War II, silat was also forbidden but the deadly art was further developed secretly and effectively used by indigenous resistance movements in the Malay region. After the war, Malayan states began establishing their independence and Silat, being a homegrown art, experienced a rebirth in the years that followed. In Malaysia alone, there are more than 150 distinct styles of Silat and it said that one out of five Malaysians are schooled in the various forms of Silat. Interest in the combat art of Silat has grown exponentially in the 20th century, and it is now practiced all over the world. Malay culture value Silat as a self-defense system, a sport and a way of life. It is also seen as a teaching tool for moral as well as physical discipline. Silat Silat History Silat Fighting

Introduction Silat is a Malay word which means martial arts. Malay silat is a generic term for many Malaysian martial arts. There are at least 150 known Malay silats in Malaysia. Most popular ones are Silat Gayong (pronounced Guy Yoog), Silat Cekak, Silat Sendeng, Silat Keris Lok 9 and Silat Gayong Fatani. There is also another silat style called silat Melayu. This silat is considered as the oldest Malay silat. Silat Gayong, or correctly referred to as Silat Seni Gayong, is a Malay art of self-defense; a fighting art, the art of stopping wars. The art is not merely about self-defense, it is also for the development of the self (

GLOSSARY OF KUNTAO SILAT TERMS This effort is drawn from many sources. Primary and most significant is the DeThouars Family; The Elder Mother, her sons, Maha Guru Maurice, Pendekar Agung Paul, HaiTeng Sifu Willem, her daughter-in-law, Ebu Joyce Deerns DeThouars, and daughter Victoria, and the fine historical work by Maha Guru Victor I.C. DeThouars I must very gratefully acknowledge the help, support and instruction from Pendekar Jim Ingram and his Family and friends, SiGung U’Un Surya (Bill Chang) a great teacher of KunTao, Sheikh Shamsuddin Saleh and the Seni Gayung Family, many close family friends and relatives, the absolutely sterling work by Donn F. Draeger, and due diligence from other general literary sources and interviews of opportunity. You will find words of Dutch Indonesian usage, Badui, Batak, Bugis, Bahasa, Chinese of various dialects, Arabic Muslim words, Indian and Southeast Asian usages, Filipino and others. Sometimes a word in common usage will have a specific usage to we alone, sometimes to other martial styles or even religious interpretations. I mean no disrespect to anyone’s beliefs or any other version of history. The Glossary is drawn from the verbal instructions and direct personal history from the primary sources to me; as I understood it. There are many languages and cultures in Indonesia and ‘history is written by the literate of the winners’. The political and cultural overtones of the language and the history have ramifications far outside the intent and content of this small effort. This effort will, however, support our martial artis silat video presentation of the de Thouars Family Martial Arts.
