Hockey players move faster than players in any other team sport.
Hockey players move faster than players in any other team sport. To be in the NHL you need to be, among other things, an exceptional skater. The players and coaches seem to agree that to be an effective skater, you need a combination of good technique and physical strength (although individual responses differed as far as which was the more important quality). The scientists in this section help break down the mechanics and physics of skating. Our exploration starts with the interaction between the blade and ice surface. In this section there are RealAudio and video clips from chemist Gabor Somorjai of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Sharks' strength and conditioning coach Steve Millard, and Exploratorium scientist Thomas Humphrey.
Slippery when not wet? The nature of ice was examined in "The Ice" sectionincluding the latest findings by chemist Gabor Somorjai. This new information about ice changes the way we look at skating. For a number of years before Somorjai's research, there was a debate as to whether pressure or friction created the water lubricant that was believed to be required for skating. Most scientists seemed to think that it was pressure. According to Somorjai's findings this is not the case. So what do you skate on? Well, actually you skate on vibrating molecules.
Professor Somorjai discusses how his discoveries differ from the long-held theories about how people skate.

Learn about the sport of skating in its three primary forms roller skating, inline skating, and ice skating. Browse selected ice skating and roller skating information resources.

The sport of "skating" can be broken into three categories: roller skating, inline skating, and ice skating.
    Roller Skating
Roller skating involves gliding over a smooth surface on roller skates, which are specially designed boots with two wheels at the front and two at the heel. Roller skating can be enjoyed outdoors or at indoor roller rinks. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, roller skating lost some of its appeal as in-line skates became popular. In the early 18th century, a Dutchman named Joseph Merlin came up with the idea of attaching wooden spools to a plate to simulate ice skating on dry ground. In 1763, the first roller skates were created, featuring metal wheels. In 1863, American inventor James Leonard Plimpton patented the first roller skates that enabled the wearer to move about more smoothly by shifting weight. Roller skates with ball-bearing wheels took over several decades later, and vaudeville acts often made use of these skates. Plastic polyurethane wheels were introduced in the 1970s; these wheels allowed for easier maneuvering, increasing the sport's popularity. Roller skating competition has included artistic skating, speed skating, roller hockey, and roller derby. Artistic skating shares similarities with figure skating, and can be performed with or without a partner. Speed skaters race through a course, competing against each other and the clock. Roller hockey utilizes rules similar to ice hockey. Roller derby, which died out in the 1970s, was a contact sport involving teams racing around a track. During the 1990s, inline skaters began competing in derby events.

Home Library Miscellaneous Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Recreation and sport in which the participants use roller skates (shoes with sets of wheels attached) to move about on special rinks or paved surfaces. The invention of roller skates is traditionally credited to the Belgian Joseph Merlin in the 1760s, but the first practical four-wheel skate was designed in 1863 by James Plimpton of Medford, Mass. Roller-skating speed events became popular in the early 20th century. Later, team competitions in "roller derbies" on banked tracks became a spectator sport. Other roller-skate contests, such as acrobatics and hockey, followed. In the late 20th century, roller skates gave way to in-line (Rollerblade) skates, in which a single row of wheels is used in place of the standard rectangular configuration. Many youngsters become fascinated with ice skating after reading the classic book Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates Dodge was born in 1831. Widowed in her late 20s, she started writing children's stories to support herself and her children. "Hans Brinker," first published in 1865, went through more than 100 editions in her lifetime. Though the book presented a vivid portrait of Holland, Dodge never visited Holland until she was almost 50. Dodge's other major claim to fame is having been the first editor of the children's magazine "St. Nicholas." Her high literary standards helped attract submissions from well-known writers of the day, such as Mark Twain. Dodge died in 1905. The roller figuer skating jump, equivalent to the ice figure skating toe-loop is called the Mapses in her honor. Tyler Communications
