Skating most important aspect of goaltending
Edmonton Oilers' goalie Nikolai Khabibulin deflects a shot during a game against Florida earlier this season. (John Ulan/Canadian Press)
Yes, you read the headline correctly. I see so many parents and coaches in minor hockey making the age-old mistake: "Put Joey or Jenny in net, they can't skate!" They couldn't be any more off base! When parents or goalies ask me what the single most important aspect of goaltending is, without fail I say skating. I've heard some smart alecks out there say, "I thought it was about stopping the puck." For those I say, it's pretty tough to consistently make saves if you can't get into position on time or ahead of time. Since we're talking hockey and not street/road hockey, skating has and will always be the name of the game. Especially now - the game is faster than ever and has more changes of direction. Skating adds strength to your net game If you watch the best receivers in football, they catch more than 90 per cent of the balls that hit their hands, but they have to work to get in position to catch the ball. That's a similar concept to goaltending, but goalies are on quarter-inch steel blades on ice and all their movements are done in and around the net area, which is roughly 36 square feet. This is why their movement has to be so precise.

In this eHow, we'll not only supply you with a little history about figure skating, but we'll also teach you how the sport works, so you, too, will froth at the mouth, waiting to see whether that Uzbekistanian waif will beat the Russian favorite (again). Oaks Park Historic Skating Rink The Oaks Skating Rink is part of Oaks Amusement Park, located along the eastern edge of the powerful Willamette River below the Sellwood bridge. The floor is of wood construction with a size of 100' x 200', which is large by most standards. It is maintained meticulously and is in excellent condition. We have many activities during our weekly sessions for all to enjoy. Many of our sessions you may enjoy the music and sounds of the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, with Keith Fortune at the keyboards. Come and celebrate a birthday with us or book a private party for a large group of friends. We even have sessions and activities for your preschool through middle school aged kids. Oaks Skating Rink is home to three interactive clubs, speed, artistic and our junior Olympic club. All three are recognized by the USA Roller Sports (USA/RS), our governing body. Each year in June, Oaks Park hosts the Northwest Regional Championship comprised of skaters from Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Oregon. Those skaters who place in the top three of their event qualify to skate the US National Roller Skating Championships. This portion of this site is developed to inform Portlanders, and visitors to our area, of our rink activities as well as a means to communicate information to our current club members.
