61. The Online Skeleton
Features a PDF download of the human skeleton, with close-ups of each part, and an explanation of the way they are connected.

The online skeleton is an introduction to the human skeleton in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. It started life as a section in a booklet on Forensic Anthropology which I produced for my students at the University of New England. The emphasis in this course was towards procedures which were of relevance to people working in Australia. This shows through in the examples and data used in the pdf document. The online skeleton is a 1.4 Mb file, with a large number of photographs. In order to keep the document at a manageable size the majority of these were scanned at only 72 dpi. Although the photographs are at a low resolution the document is designed to be printed rather than read on screen. Links within the pdf file are indicated by red text, for instance on the anterior and posterior illustrations of the human skeleton, or by thumbnail size pictures within the text. You are free to use this document as long as it is not for commercial gain and acknowledge where you obtained it from. The contents and emphasis of the online skeleton were strongly influenced by the following two books Warwick, R. and Williams, P. 1973.

1978 edition
THIS is a re-issue, up-dated and much more fully illustrated, of the book first published in 1944 that released the hitherto top secret story of what is surely the most dramatic and inspiring shipwreck and rescue drama of all time.
The story is true in every particular, incredulous as many a reader is likely to find the amazing series of events related. There were some who labelled it "the wildest fiction" when first they read it. But it has stood the test of time. The incident that led to the participation in the drama of the Merchant Marines of several countries, the British and South African Navies, the South African Air Force, the South African Army, the South African Police and the South African Railways and Harbours Administration, demanding from each of the men their utmost resources of courage, endurance, persistence, ingenuity, compassion and humanity, as well as intelligence and muscle, took place midway through World War 2 off the coast of South West Africa that is scheduled soon to become the independent country of Namibia.
That particular part of the S.W.A./Namibia coast has been for centuries for all who knew it the most frightening piece of the Earth.

Baboons live in African woodland savannas, and subsist on roots, tubers, grasses, seeds, and fruit, but also hunt animals smaller than themselves. The three genera of baboons, Mandrillus Papio , and Theropithecus , are not closely related and differ in morphology and behavior. Papio cynocephalus has a dog-like muzzle and a yellowish-brown coat of fur. Like all baboons, yellow baboons are sexually dimorphic, weighing between 11-26 kg (24-57 lbs), with females approximately 1/2 the size of males. Most times baboons live in polygamous social groups with up to nine females, but they also congregate into foraging "bands" of 30 individuals, or into "troops" of as large as 100. Chimpanzees live in a variety of African habitats, and consume both vegetation and meat. Part of the family of great apes, the four recognized subspecies of chimpanzees are Pan versus P. paniscus , and P. schweinfurthii , and P. troglodytes , or the common chimpanzee. Characterized by large ears, chimpanzees also have a prognathic (protruding) face with large lips and pronounced supraorbital crests. Their weight ranges between 34-70 kg (75-154 lbs) for males, and 25-50 kg (55-110 lbs) for females, with higher weights observed in captivity. Chimpanzees are known for manufacturing and using tools, something once considered an exclusively human trait. Marmosets , all seventeen named species, live in the New World tropical forests of South America.

    scientific name: Harrisina americana
Introduction Identification Life History Damage and Detection ... Selected References
    Introduction
This species is common throughout Florida, with the possible exception of the Keys, and it ranges widely in the eastern half of the United States. It is noticed primarily because of its defoliation of grapevines in home gardens.
    Identification
Adult moths are uniformly black except for a yellowish or orange collar. The antennae are pectinate in both sexes and plumose in the male. The forewings are four times as long as wide and more than twice the area of the hind wings. The abdomen is usually curled upwards and expanded at the tip into a fan-shaped, somewhat bilobed caudal tuft. Length of the moth is 8 to 12 mm, while the wing expanse is 22 to 28 mm. adult mating pair Larvae are yellowish and have black spots or bands. They are slightly more than 1/2 inch long when mature. larvae feeding on grape leaf Eggs are lemon yellow, cylindrical-oval or capsule-shaped, slightly over 1/2 mm in length, and laid in clusters on lower leaf surfaces. larvae hatching on grape leaf Similar species in Florida include the zygaenids Acoloithus falsarius Clemens and A. rectarius

California's first fossilized 25,000,000 year-old toothed baleen whales were discovered at Lake Casitas on January 19, 2000 by Ojai resident Aaron Plunkett. Dr. Lawrence Barnes, chief paleontologist of the marine mammal lab at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, confirmed authenticity of the specimens brought to him by Mr. Plunkett. Dr. Barnes examined a lumbar vertebrate and two posterior symetrical right mandible jawbones, deducing that two prehistoric whales exist. (Please see Ojai Valley Whale Society mission statement ). These discoveries were first presented to the Western Association of Vertebrate Paleontologists' at their 2000 Annual Meeting held in Flagstaff, Arizona-an abstract of this presentation was published in the proceedings of that meeting. The discovery was also reported in the Fall 2000 News Bulletin of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Ancient DNA may be misleading scientists
      Tuesday, 18 February 2003
Dating skeletal material with DNA may not be as acurate as thought Ancient DNA in skeletons has a tendency to show damage in a particular region, resulting in misleading genetic data and mistaken conclusions about the origin of the skeleton, British scientists said.
A group of researchers at the Henry Wellcome Ancient Biomolecules Centre of the University of Oxford, in Britain, made the finding while studying Viking specimens. They found that about half of the specimens had DNA that suggested they were of Middle Eastern origin.
But more detailed analysis revealed that many of the genetic sequences in the double helix molecule, which carries the genetic information of every individual, were damaged at a key base that separates European sequences from Middle Eastern genetic types - damage which made the skeletons appear to have originated in the Levant.
The results are published in the February 2003 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics
Damage events appear to be concentrated in specific 'hotspots', indicating that a high proportion of DNA molecules can be modified at the same point. These hotspots appear to be in positions that also differ between different human groups. In other words, the DNA damage discovered affects the same genetic positions as evolutionary change.
