5 MAP SPECIFICATION FOR SKI-ORIENTEERING
5.1 General
Maps for ski orienteering are based on the specifications for foot-orienteering maps. However in order to meet the specific requirements put on the map by the nature of ski orienteering, certain deviations and additions to the foot-orienteering map specification is needed. These special rules and symbols are described in this chapter. Deviations from the specifications are permissible only with the sanction of the national Ski-O Committee. For international events, sanction must be given by the IOF Ski-O Committee. Complete foot-orienteering maps may be used in ski-o competitions at all levels, if the dark green ( symbol 410 ) is replaced by light green ( symbol 406 ). For international events, permission from the IOF Ski-O Committee is required.
5.2 Content
5.3 Scale The maps scale shall be 1:15 000 or 1:10 000. A different scale may be used, but permission shall be obtained from the IOF Ski-O Committee at IOF ski-o events and from the national Ski-O Committee for other events. The magnification in scale has made it possible to build a more dense and easily legible track network. Furthermore, the error probability has decreased, as the shapes of the junctions and the departure angles of the tracks can be drawn correctly on the map.

A successful ski orienteer combines high physical endurance, strength and excellent technical skiing skills with the ability to navigate and make the best route choices while skiing at a high speed. Standard Orienteering maps are used, but with special green overprinting of trails and tracks to indicate their navigability in Snow ; other symbols indicate whether any roads are snow-covered or clear. Navigation tactics is similar to Mountain bike orienteering . Standard skate-skiing equipment is used, along with a map holder attached to the chest. Compared to Cross-country skiing , upper body strength is more important because of double pooling needed along narrow snow trails.

Ski orienteering events are designed to test both physical strength and navigation skills of the athletes. Ski orienteers use the map to navigate a dense ski track network in order to visit a number of control points in the shortest possible time. The track network is printed on the map, and there is no marked route in the terrain. The control points must be visited in the right order. The map gives all information the athlete needs in order to decide which route is the fastest, including the quality and width of the tracks. The athlete has to take hundreds of route choice decisions at high speed during every race: a slight lack of concentration for just a hundredth of a second may cost the medal. Ski orienteering is time-measured and objective. The clock is the judge: fastest time wins. The electronic card verifies that the athlete has visited all control points in the right order.

      Ski Orienteering
Ski Orienteering is a well developed sport in Europe and has spread to other countries; it was introduced to Australia on a structured basis in 1994. Australian skiers have taken part in major overseas events, both participant and competitive, including the world championships in Norway 1996 and Austria 1998. Ski-O was a demonstration sport at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, with the aim of inclusion in the official programme from 2002 in Salt Lake City, USA.
      What is Ski Orienteering?
The main idea is to ski to controls marked on your map, in correct order. All of the controls are on tracks or on mapped features off-track and accessible on skis.
Isn't it very easy to ski along tracks made by other ski orienteers who started before you?
Well, it's not as easy as you might think. It may seem that ski orienteering is very simple, you only have to ski from one control to another. However, there are usually different possible routes between controls. So, the idea is to select the best route, considering:
      Length of the route
      Track classification:
It's faster and easier to ski continuous good quality tracks as much as possible.
