Ski-Jöring Clinics and Tours
Mad Dogs and Englishmen is currently the first and only ski-joring tour company in Kananaskis Country, Alberta.
Ski-Joring is a hybrid sport that is still relatively new in the public eye. Combining dog sledding with skiing, ski-joring originated in Scandinavia and has gained popularity in racing circuits, as well as, recreational circuits around the world. It was introduced as a demonstration sport at the 'Lake Placid Winter Olympics'. Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a ski-jör racing kennel training a number of dogs for competitive racing. As the sport is growing in popularity, so to does the racing circuit with the addition of a ski-joring class being added to a number of pre-existing dog sled race venues.
Today, recreational ski-joring is becoming more and more popular and is ideally suited to the long Alberta winters. Your family K-9 companion can be quite easily accommodated, all you need is a little know how.
Ski Jör Clinics Mad Dogs and Englishmen have developed a 'Ski-Joring Clinic' to teach the fundamentals of the sport. The clinic is designed to give you a good foundation to actively utilize your new skills out on the trails with your best friend (K-9 friend that is!).

Incredible Air
Making the Jump Ski Joring
Horses, skiers and snowboarders at the Green River Valley Winter Carnival
by Pinedale Online!
March 7, 2005 What do you get when you mix winter in Wyoming, horses and skiing? Ski Joring! Riders on horses pull skiers and snowboarders down a course of jumps and tight cuts in a timed race event. Jumps are made using hay bales with packed snow for ramps. Some of the more experienced skiers and snowboarders get some incredible air as they try to maximize their jumps and put on a show for spectators. Winners received medals.
Kids of varying ages and skill levels participated in Saturday’s ski joring event during the 4th annual Green River Valley Winter Carnival at the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds. Julie Early brought her horse and served as the pulling team power for the racers. The racers had to navigate four hay bale jumps along the winding course to complete the run. If the racer crashed on one of the jumps, Julie rode back with the pull rope and the racer continued the course to the finish. The racers with the fastest overall time won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals. This was a fun event for both racers and spectators. Wyoming can’t claim credit to inventing ski joring, although the sport does fit perfectly with our long winters and western ranching lifestyle. Ski joring began as a sport in Scandanavian countries hundreds of years ago as a means of travel over the winter using Nordic skis and reindeer. Today, equestrian ski joring is a highly specialized competitive sport with scheduled events in many states. In other places, skiers might be pulled behind snowmobiles, mules or even dogs.

The story of ski Joring dates back several hundred years ago
to Scandinavia as a way for people to travel during the harsh and
snowy winter months. Towed behind reindeer on long wooden
skis, these early travelers found ski Joring or “ski driving” a
useful and practical mode of transport and communication.
St. Moritz, Switzerland February 12, 1928 at the 2nd Olympic
Winter Games competitors held a skijoring demonstration. This
style was performed rider less with the skier driving the horse
from behind and racing head to head with the other competitors.
Back in the late 1940's the sport of ski joring was started by two men, Tom Schroeder and Mugs Ossman. They traveled to Steamboat Colorado to the winter carnival and saw the ski joring event there. They came back with these ideas of doing it at the winter carnival in Leadville Co. Mugs was a horseman who prided himself in having very fast quarter horses. Tom, an avid skier then, said that there wasn't a horse fast enough to dump

Ski Joring in Montana
What is Ski Joring? What You'll Need Where to go in Montana What is Ski Joring? If you're a ski joring enthusiast from way back, you can probably skip this section. But chances are, you're scratching your head in wonder right now, trying to figure out what ski joring is. The easiest way to explain it is: it's a cross between dog sledding and cross country skiing. Or, it's a cross between sleigh riding and cross country skiing. Depending on which animal you prefer, it involves having a dog or horse pull you on cross country skis. (You're on the skis, not the dog or horse.) This activity, like just about any activity involving cross country skis, traces its roots to Scandinavian heritage. But it's gaining popularity in the U.S., with a growing list of clubs and organized competitions such as the National Finals Ski Joring Races in Red Lodge, Montana each March.

Equestrian ski joring is a very specialized winter sport that is becoming increasingly popular. Read here about facts and info about this fun winter sport.

Ski Joring - Horse and Ski Combined
Equestrian ski joring is a winter sport where riding and skiing is combined: a horse is pulling a person on ski. Thereby the horse can be ridden by a horseback rider or driven from the person on ski or newer, on a snowboard. It is a very speedy sport that is gaining immensely in popularity. Its origin is Scandinavia, where people used reindeer, horses or dogs for pulling the person on ski and to travel over certain distances fast. Some sources consider this sort of transportation to be as old as 2500 B.C.! Nowadays it has become already a very specialized and highly competitive sport. Especially in North America (USA, Canada) and in Europe (France, Switzerland) is ski joring popular: it has been introduced the first time at Olympic Winter Games (1928) in St.Moritz (CH).
Ski Joring
NASJA and NESJA are American Associations
that would like to make the sport more and more popular in North and North East America. The competitive version of this winter sport is about speed, jumping over snow ramps and slalom tracks. To be honest, it looks pretty much fun!

From Green River Valley Winter Carnival (2005)

    by Dawn Ballou, Pinedale Online!
March 25, 2007 The latest edition of Model Horse Magazine (Volume VII), published in England, features a section on “the fast-paced equine extreme sport of Skijoring, in which skiers are towed along by galloping thoroughbreds around an ice covered track.” The 4-page article features two photos of the ski joring event here in Pinedale which took place during the 2005 Green River Valley Winter Carnival.
A representative of Model Horse Magazine contacted Pinedale Online in late January asking for permission to use photos from a photo story from the ski joring event in the Green River Valley Winter Carnival held in 2005. One photo featured Julie Early riding a horse pulling a skier over a hay bale jump. The second photo is of Julie’s son, Jesse, in a big air jump on his skis. They also have a link to the URL of a Pinedale Ski Joring video clip on Pinedale Online (1,314K - requires Windows Media Player to view).

    Ski Joring
by Debora Johnson Visit the North East Ski Joring Association Scandinavian countries are the originators of ski joring. The word "joring" translates to "driving" or ski driving. This sport has been done for several hundred years. Laplanders skied on Nordic skis holding reins attached to reindeer. It is also done with dogs, mules, horses, and snowmobiles. Ski joring came to the United States in the 1050's. Ranchers attached a long rope to the saddle horn and rode the horse at high speeds down a long straight-away. Currently, the sport of equestrian ski joring has become a highly specialized competitive sport, where competitors must navigate a course of jumps, gates and sometimes spear rings. On April 24th, 1999, directors from almost every major ski joring organization in the country, met in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and began a process that would change the sport of ski joring forever. After several follow-up meetings, the North American Ski Joring Association (NASJA) was born. This marked ski joring's beginning as a sanctioned competitive sport. NASJA was developed because of the need to consolidate existing ski joring races into a circuit. Competitors could now earn points that would officially go toward a National Champion Award. NASJA developed standardized criteria for all sanctioned events. Because of this standardized criteria, each competitor would have an equal opportunity at becoming the official National Ski Joring Champion.
