For other uses, see Snowshoe (disambiguation) A pair of modern snowshoes Traditional snowshoe A Snowshoe is footwear for walking over the snow . Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot does not sink completely into the snow, a quality called "flotation". Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings. Some modern snowshoes are similar, but most are made of materials such as lightweight metal, plastic, and synthetic fabric. In addition to distributing the weight, snowshoes are generally raised at the toe for maneuverability. They must not accumulate snow, hence the latticework , and require bindings to attach them to the feet. In the past, snowshoes were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life or living depended on the ability to get around in areas of deep and frequent snowfall, and they remain necessary equipment for forest rangers and others who must be able to get around areas inaccessible to motorized vehicles when the snow is deep. However, today snowshoes are mainly used for recreation, primarily by

First-Timer's Guide
Snowshoe Magazine's Guide to Snowshoeing: Knowing What to Buy, Where to Go, How to Get Started and Learn What's Important There is no better way to begin snowshoeing than just going and doing it. Take a risk, rent or buy a pair of snowshoes, dress for the elements and enjoy. However, that's just a start - there is more to it than just taking a refreshing plunge in some snow.
For a quick introduction to snowshoeing, watch this informational YouTube video (duration: approximately five minutes): click here
Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years. And, obviously, the art of snowshoeing has become more sophisticated over time - now it's considered a winter sport. From the early wood-frame to the aluminum-frame models, snowshoeing has garnered quite a following throughout the world. Modern day snowshoeing is made up of casual snowshoers who hike trails for pleasure, the snowshoeing enthusiasts who trek through the backcountry, and the competitors who race.
Considering this is the fastest growing winter sport in the world (snowboarding is growing fast too, but not fast enough), snowshoeing is poised to become a monster of a market. Many involved in skiing and snowboarding utilize snowshoes to participate in some great backcountry hikes to find the holy grail of mother nature: Deep, unscathed powder. Snowshoeing is a great alternative for many sports - especially those who like running.

Carl Heilman has been involved in the sport of snowshoeing ever since making his first pair of snowshoes in the early 1970's. He has written numerous articles on the subject and has also published a booklet on making snowshoes (unnavailable until fall 2004). He's been leading beginner's and advanced snowshoeing workshops for the Adirondack Mtn. Club and the Appalachian Mtn. Club since the mid 1980's and has also done programs and workshops for many other organizations and schools throughout the northeast. He has also led snowshoe clinics for the major outdoor industry trade show held each winter in Salt Lake City. Carl handcrafted his 'high-tech' traditional snowshoes until 1997, and has also done some snowshoe design consulting work with major manufacturers. His snowshoes have been used all over the world, and some of his ideas for snowshoe design have been incorporated into commercial designs. While he enjoys passing along his expertise on snowshoeing and winter travel, he especially enjoys seeing folks turn-on to the sport after using snowshoes for the first time!
The following pages are a result of his trying to help demystify the sport of snowshoeing and choosing snowshoes. Each facet of snowshoes and snowshoeing has been broken down into it's simplest components. Hopefully this will help provide a better understanding of snowshoes so folks can more easily choose snowshoes that are best suited for them, and help them take those first steps in the snow with confidence! If You Can Walk, You can Snowshoe
My first chance to try snowshoeing came as an outing from my gym. We formed up carpools and stopped at a ski shop to rent snowshoes, at a cost of $9 per day including ski poles. zSB(3,3) Poles are optional in showshoeing just as they are optional in hiking. They can be nice to help you maintain balance, but are not necessary. Gaiters and layered clothing are highly recommended. Related Resources What to Wear Winter Walking
    Snowshoes: Compare Prices
The snowshoes went on easily with 3 straps. You can use them with any shoes or boots. I wore them with my waterproof New Balance 962 walking shoes. Once on, it was easy to move about simply by walking. Only a few times did I manage to step one showshoe onto the other and trip myself. The showshoes grip the snow with crampons at toe and heel. This is what allows you to simply walk along without slipping and without using any fancy technique. Going uphill and downhill use the same maneuvers as when walking except on extreme slopes where you may want to kick steps into the snow. It is important to plant the snowshoe flat on the surface to get a grip with the crampons.

    WINTER HIKING
There's probably a few good reasons to hang up the hiking boots during the WinterI just can't think of one ! Many of the trails that we travel in Spring, Summer, and Fall are also available during the Winter. Many public parks, cities, and towns maintain trail systems which remain accessible for Winter hiking and even snowshoeing. Some have special rules that apply to Winter use so check with them for specifics. If nothing else, it's a great way to keep those hiking muscles active. Many lowland backcountry trails are also available year-round, albeit muddy. Trails in the mountains, (although buried in deep snow) are also traversable (with the help of some special gear). With some additional education, training, and gear, there's no reason we can't be just as actively hiking in the Winter as in the other three seasons. Check it out ! Find out what's available in your area. You might be surprised at the possibilities. For the higher elevations, why not try snowshoeing ?

New Trips and Venues for 2011
The Alps in winter are magical and beautiful, the mountains and the forests transformed by the blanket of white. Why not come out and discover this beautiful world and give yourself a break from winter at home?
Any fine day between December and April will not only see masses of people taking to the ski slopes, but also many setting off on snow shoes. Snowshoeing has become incredibly popular in the last ten years, although its history goes back many centuries. I offer snow shoeing weeks throughout the winter from January to April. Holidays based in the Chamonix region, the Aosta region and the Valais region of Switzerland. The holidays feature day walks from a hotel base and overnights in mountain accommodation. We aim to ascend walking summits and explore the best of the mountains in winter far from the crowds. Given the quantities of snow one can regularly expect above, say, 1000m, it is very often completely out of the question to go on foot anywhere that isn’t packed down into a hard trail (you can expect at least 2 metres of snow at 2000m). This would seem to preclude walking in the Alps in winter, unless you equip yourself with the means to avoid sinking up to thigh level, or worse, in the snow. Snowshoeing can be described as winter walking. On snowshoes you can go to places otherwise inaccessible in the snow - walks in the forests, up to the alpages, and beyond to some of the alpine summits.
