What Jeff Carter's three-point night teaches us about scanning box scores

Al Bello - Getty Images Before I embark on this, let me just point out that this isn't meant to be a knock against Jeff Carter . It's a lesson and, moreover, a warning that we can't just look at a box score and expect to understand what happened in a hockey game. It just so happens that Carter will be our guinea pig. If you're not aware, Carter had a solid game on the score sheet last night. He scored a goal and put up two assists. As a result, he was named one of Puck Daddy's three stars of the night and at one point he was referenced with a big photo on NHL.com's front page. His night was the lede in the Sports Network recap of the game, and according to the Associated Press headline, his three points "lifted" the Flyers over the Sabres. Oh, if only that were true.

Schoolyard Puck
Cheap Shooting Pad
Posted by Keegan equipment
The other day I bought a sheet of plastic for $20 plus $5 shipping.
I wanted a skill pad for practicing handling and shooting off the ice. Why? Playing with a ball or roller hockey puck isn't quite the same as using a 6 oz ice hockey puck. Also, I'm tired of chewing up my stick blade whenever I want to practice ice.
I know the shooting pads over at places like HockeyShot.com have advantages like a handle cutout and beveled edges so you can "ramp" the puck onto the pad, but I didn't feel like spending that much money. I've heard of other players using a sheet of plastic to simulate the ice, so I headed over to USPlastics.com to see what was available. I settled on a 24" x 48" sheet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plasticitem #42588.
It arrived yesterday.
I threw a puck on the sheet, grabbed my stick, and messed around for awhile. It worked fine, but I really wanted a frictionless surface as close to ice as possible. I ran to the hardware store and purchased a can of silicone spray lubricant. After applying a light coat, the puck slid much better. I think this pad will do the trick.
I have not used it extensively yet, so I can't vouch for its durability, but it looks sturdy. I'll let you know how I like it. Where do you usually go to practice shooting or stick handling?

Most of the time, a ball is used instead of a puck, because a puck generates too much friction when handled on an asphalt or cement surface and does not slide. Street hockey is

Shockers Season is Done
This marks the end of another Shockers' season which ends up being one of the most disappointing ones yet as the Shockers failed to make the playoffs for the first time in team history.
The Shockers will be left along way side as the playoffs kick off shortly.
There has be no word from team management that there will be another version of the Shockers for the fall season. Posted by theSHOCKERS at 4:44 PM 0 comments

Brown Rocket Has Been Grounded
The Shockers were riding a high from their convincing 7-1 victory this past Tuesday until they received word from team doctors earlier today that Jeff "The Brown Rocket" Jasmin will most likely be missing the rest of the season with what could be as worse as a career-ending knee injury.
"They said it looks broken as fuck, I don't know what to do with myself," Jasmin slurred in a drunken rage.
Since Jasmin learned about the injury he has been hitting the bottle hard than former Shocker Greg Emmanuel in his first season with the team (reference stories of vomiting and extremely clubbing and question acts of gay sex).
"It is unfortunate for us. Jeff is a hard worker and his team spirit will be missed out on the surface," commented captain, Danny Balenzano.
