I saw a couple of specials on TV about lugers biting it and getting really messed up. One dude had his teeth coming through his lower lip. I decided then that maybe I didn't want to mess around with that sport. But of course MTV found a music video with luge in it and managed to talk me into it. When I got to the site, I was a little unhappy with the stretch of road they had picked out. I figured since this was my first time that I would be on a mellow, wide open road. But no. We happened to be using the same gnarly stretch that the top street lugers practice on. It was steep and narrow with tight curves along a cliff. I was introduced to Bob Peryra and was stoked to find out that he was a really cool guy who was concerned about my safety. Then I met "Digger". This guy concerned me a little bit at first. He was a crazy Australian with a mohawk. But he turned out to be really cool too. I was starting to think that the whole thing might be fun. Bob and Digger gave me some brief instruction on how to control the luge. The "sled" that they had brought for me was custom designed for my height and weight, and had never been ridden before. I was the test pilot for this brand new luge. I figured that would be a good thing, since all the bolts and stuff would be nice and tight. But Bob told me that it takes many runs on a new sled to fun tune the wheel trucks for the best maneuverability. It was very warm out and he said that more than likely the trucks would be a little loose for my run. He warned me that the sled could get a little squirrelly.

Darren had spent all weekend building a board based on his Street Luge days in the late 1970's and then he got his room mate to ride with him for the French film crew.   Darren then approached me on my next business trip.  He plopped me on the old "carpet board" while he rode his new board.  I was hooked. Goldendale, WA, USA- Andy Lally capped off a crazy coast to coast racing weekend with three race wins. His week began at Maryhill with the practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday morning. After the Thursday AM session he quickly drove to Portland to catch a flight to Florida so he could race his #66 TRG Porsche GT3 at Daytona International Raceway in the Rolex Sports Car Series. Andy had a great weekend at Daytona earning the GT class victory over his longtime rival Joey Hand in Saturday's Brumos Porsche 250. After the race, Lally made another quick dash to the airport to get back to Portland. He arrived back in Goldendale around midnight for some sleep before Sunday's Maryhill Festival of Speed finals. Since Lally had missed both qualification runs, he was forced to start from the back of the pack in both the Street Luge and Classic Luge races. Conditions at the track were hot and very windy. The wind especially affected the Street Luges off the start where it was difficult to get a good push because of the headwind. The sport started in Southern California as skateboarders discovered that they could reach faster speeds by lying down on their skateboards as they raced downhill. The sport has evolved rapidly since then, in both the style of lying on the board, and the design of the racing luges/skateboards too. The high number of injuries in early events nearly curtailed the sport, but now there are strict safety requirements for any sanctioned competitions, including the wearing of a helmet, sturdy shoes and a protective racing suit. Building a "Go Fast BodyRocket" street luge This article describes the different stages of the construction of a "SLED" street luge. You may notice that I am not so creative since I used Tim Cayer's design called "BodyRocket" (on sale @ www.irssports.com , our partner.
