  • About Tai Chi Tai Chi Chuan is a martial arts form that dates back to ancient China. Tai chi continues to be used today for sport, competitive tournaments, and improvement of health and longevity. Tai Chi Vs. Chi Gong Tai chi and chi gong, usually spelled qigong in pinyin, the official romanization system of Chinese, are similar forms of Chinese exercise which both have roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). How to Dress for Tai Chi When learning tai chi, the Chinese martial art that focuses on precise movements and breathing techniques, you should dress comfortably. You will be performing exact physical movements requiring strength, grace and power, and your clothing should not restrict your movements. How to Relax With Tai Chi Millions of people use the Chinese martial art of tai chi to relax and to reduce stress. Tai chi employs breathing techniques that are designed to draw, store and release energy from your body, and invigorate your spirit. The secret to tai chi is to relax completely while remaining aware of your surroundings and your body. How to Stand in Tai Chi When you learn Tai Chi, you need to examine and practice all body movements. Many stances in Tai Chi flow into each other, and all work with the same basic way of standing. The basic beginning stance in Tai Chi is called the Wu Chi, or "stillness," stance.

Tai Chi is known as a yielding or soft style of martial arts. The art's fluid movements take advantage of the body's natural mechanics and the external forces of nature.
As a student, you'll begin your learning with basic stepping and turning practice incorporating a relaxed, but grounded posture. You'll also learn some simple movements from the Yang Family style of Tai Chi.
The curriculum also offers you the opportunity to learn Chi Kung. These meditative, yoga-like exercises emphasize strength, flexibility and balance while helping you improve the circulation of chi, or energy. At the core of Tai Chi is the skill of meditation. You'll learn some basic breathing techniques that you can use to incorporate meditation into your daily life.
Other internal systems taught at our school include Pa Kua Chang (Eight Trigrams Palm), Hsing-I Chuan (Fist of Will) and other tai chi styles like Chen Family.

    Description
Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that is part of qigong. It is a mind-body, self-healing system that uses movement, meditation, and breathing to improve health and well-being.
    Overview
Research has shown tai chi is useful as a form of exercise that can improve posture, balance, muscle mass and tone, flexibility, stamina, and strength in older adults. Tai chi is also recognized as a method to reduce stress that can provide the same cardiovascular benefits as moderate exercise, such as lowered heart rate and blood pressure.
How is it promoted for use?

    WHAT IS TAI CHI?
The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Force'. The notion of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, the notion that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) in all things. 'Force' (or, more literally, 'fist') can be thought of here as the means or way of achieving this ying-yang, or 'supreme-ultimate' discipline. Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. For many practicioners the focus in doing them is not, first and foremost, martial, but as a meditative exercise for the body. For others the combat aspects of Tai Chi are of considerable interest. In Chinese philosophy and medicine there exists the concept of 'chi', a vital force that animates the body. One of the avowed aims of Tai Chi is to foster the circulation of this 'chi' within the body, the belief being that by doing so the health and vitality of the person are enhanced. This 'chi' circulates in patterns that are close related to the nervous and vascular system and thus the notion is closely connected with that of the practice of acupuncture and other oriental healing arts.
