History
Team handball is very popular in much of the world, but little known in North America. Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena , the Danish handbold , and the German Torball All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

    The Rules
    Activity:
I begin by dividing the class into two teams. Each team is then divided again. I let each team play for about 3 minutes and then switch. While the other team is playing the resting team can get a drink, rest and after 3 minutes they are ready to play again. It seems to help reduce injuries. Return to Lesson Home Page

    TEAM HANDBALL
    THE GAME:
    • Team handball is played on a hard surface (such as a basketball court) by seven players.
    • The basic skills of running, jumping, catching and throwing are combined into a fast moving exciting game.
    • Elements of basketball, soccer, hockey and water polo can all be seen in this Olympic game.
    OBJECT OF THE GAME:
    • The basic objective of the game is to out-maneuver the opponent by passing the ball quickly, not invading the goal area circle, and by throwing the ball past the defenders and goalie to score.
    THE COURT:
    • The court boundaries are called touchlines (sideline) and goal line (endline).
    • The netted goal is located on the goal line.
    • The goal area circle (3 point line in Phy-Ed classes) surrounds the goal and only the goalie can legally be in it.
    THE EQUIPMENT:
    • The ball is the size of a small soccer ball. The official men's team handball is 23" in circumference while the official women's ball is 21". The size difference is due to hand size and the skill of being able to grip and handle the ball with one hand.
    DURATION OF GAME:
    • 60-minute game with 30-minute halves and a 10-minute intermission.
