USA Women’s National Team European Tour
The USA Women’s Team is in the midst of their 3 week European tour. They will be playing club teams in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. I saw 2 of their 3 matches in a local tournament in Issy-le-Moulineaux, just outside of Paris. They defeated an England based team 24-22, lost to Israel, and lost to Paris Select team 25-21.
I've posted a short 4 minute interview that I had with Coach Christian Latulippe at the handballusa Yahoo Group: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/handballusa/files/

Offical Game Rules and Instruction
Requirements: Open field or large gym and a small ball such as the Fun Gripper Handball (6" Soccer Ball)
Number of players: Medium to large Groups
Note: This is the #2 sport in the entire world! (Yes, only soccer is bigger)
Choose a ball that players can hold with one hand and that will bounce. Divide your players into two equal teams. If you play by the official rules you would have six field players and one goal for each team on the field.
For play area see diagram for better detail. Set up a play area around 40 X 90 with a dividing line in the center. Both ends will have a goal in the center that is 10 feet wide about 2 feet deep behind the end boundaries. Mark off from the center of the end boundary a 20-foot half circle. Within this marked area will be known as the goalie area. In front of that area centered with the goal, mark off a 10-foot penalty throw line 5 feet away from goalie line. Mark off 5 feet from that or 30 feet from goal in a half circle the free throw line.
Have the teams spread out on their part of the field with goalies in position. Start the game with a "throw-on"; this is also done after each goal. The object of the game is to move the ball down the field towards to opponent's goal. Players can do this by running with it, or using a series of throws and catches until the ball can be thrown into the goal to score a point. Each player is allowed to hold the ball for three seconds or three steps.

Club History
Gracemount Edinburgh Handball Club was created in 2002 and after five years has now around 50 players of all ages (primary, secondary ladies and men). The team boost a large contingent of international players which ensures that there is a wide range of experience for the kids to look up to. The development of handball through the younger generations is the main goal of the Club, hence ensuring that all players have a great time and that handball becomes one of the top sports in Scotland. The Club’s philosophy is to slowly develop the club with an emphasis on youth teams to create chances for as many possible kids and youths to start playing handball, and step by step built up stronger senior teams with players coming through our own ranks. Investment in youths is seen as being essential for a healthy and successful club. The Club now has several youth teams including super minis, minis, juniors, and youths and is open to men’s and ladies. Several of the youth development teams function on a mixed basis. Our teams play in the development leagues and the senior men team competes in the Scottish Handball League, Scottish Cup and British Cup. Even though competitive sport is an important aspect of the Club, we encourage the recreational aspects of sport and welcome players that wish to sport for recreation.

Despite the fact that South Korea won the women's gold medal in both and , and that over eight million people from over 150 countries play it, handball is largely considered a European-only sport. In fact, ask many Americans what they think handball is, and they'll probably describe a game similar to racquetball with two competitors slapping a small ball off a wall with their hands. Not so.

The NBA Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon began his athletic career and unknowingly honed his basketball skills by playing handball in Nigeria as a child.
The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more.

TEAM HANDBALL STUDY GUIDE Team Handball happens to be the fastest and most exciting sport in the world. It is a combination of basketball, soccer, hockey and lacrosse, and has been described as water polo played on land. The court is 40x20 m (two basketball courts) and features 2x3m goals at each end. Each Goal is surrounded by a 6m goal area (2 6m radius arcs with (center = goal post) joined by a tangent in the middle. Another arc, 9m from the posts, lies outside the goal line. This is the free throw line and it is usually dashed. A 1m long penalty throw line lies 7m in front of the goals. There is also a halfway line with a center dot for the restart. The ball used in team handball is 23 inches in circumference, and weighs about 16 ounces. The ball-playing rules are in 3's. 3 steps with the ball (a full three steps too, landing after catching the ball is step 0), 3 seconds holding the ball, and in class we had a limit of 3 dribbles. The goal keeper is the only player allowed in the goal area (6m semi-circle). (The goal area includes the line (5cm wide) so you can't contact any part of the 6m line or inside it.) They are also the only player allowed to touch the ball with their feet (below the knees), but only to save a goal, not to direct it out of the goal or to control the ball when it is not being shot at goal. The attackers may shoot from in the air above the goal area but must shoot before landing. A defender (or an attacker can not travel through the goal area in order to get an advantage at another spot, (no short cuts). Casual entry into the goal area is OK. The rule only applies if you are seen to gain some advantage by entry into the goal area.
