A First Trip to the Keys with Our Own Boat
This past January my wife and I trailered our Catalina 25 swing keel down to the Florida Keys for two weeks of exploration and general fun. We had been to the Keys several times before, but made use of other peoples boats or rentals. For various reasons, this time we had the strong desire to use our boat. It would be a number of firsts for us, even though we have sailed for several years.
The Florida Keys provide one of the best backdrops for a sailing adventure in the United States. The weather is warm even during winter and during the winter the winds provide a consistency that I can only pray for when sailing my land locked lake during the summer. But beyond the water and great weather the Keys remain a boating Mecca for all the easily accessed facilities that include plentiful State Parks, Marinas, restaurants, bars and hotels. This way, should one tire of the boat, all amenities of shore side life are, well, shore side. Other benefits include, no change of currency (at least for US citizens), many tourist attractions, snorkeling/diving and ones choice of ocean, inside reef or protected bay sailing.

The trailer we use has electric brakes. It is also made for the Catalina 25. The entire trailering system is very simple. However to be safe I had a new brake controller and wiring harness installed on my SUV. I added a new spare tire for the trailer with locks to prevent theft. I also traveled with locks for my hitch and outboard motor to prevent theft of both. Before we left, I tested the everything, adjusted braking force of the trailer brakes and made a simple schematic of the entire system. This might seem like overkill, but if you have ever been stuck on the side of the road in the middle of the night trying to get your trailer lights or brakes to work you will appreciate it. Trust me you want those things working; nothing is more worrisome than several tons of boat and trailer behind you going down hill. Having everything in working order will put your mind to rest.

Trailer sailing: just hook it up, drive to the water, step the mast, launch it, and you're sailing. What's not to like about trailer sailing? A trailerable sailboat offers a number of benefits and options that should be considered by almost anyone in the market for a sailboat. I say almost anyone because some boats are too big or too unwieldy to trailer on a regular basis. In this article I'll review the major points that you'll want to consider if you're thinking about the option of trailering your boat. Let's begin with the advantages. Trailering offers you the chance to eliminate expensive docking and winter storage fees, and it can also open up a wide geographical range of sailing venues. Avid racers have long sought to keep their boats on land to avoid the necessity of painting the bottoms with anti-fouling and to keep the hulls as slick as possible for that extra competitive edge. These sailors know that, though having their boats on a trailer might occasionally mean more time is involved in getting underway, the task of launching via a lift or a ramp is usually pretty straightforward and painless. And for them, having a trailerable boat makes it possible to participate in competitions too far away to get to in a reasonable time via water.

I'm in the midwest, and have access to a large lake (10,000 acres) about 10 miles from home. I'm a pretty new sailor I've had some lessons in Boston, at Community Boating, and a couple of vacations' worth of dinghy sailing on inland lakes. I'm thinking about buying a (very) small boat, just for day sailing. It would be easy enough to get a local mooring, but I would also want to trailer up to northern Michigan every summer, again, mostly for inland sailing, but possibly also on Grand Traverse Bay.
My question is about single-handed trailering: apologies if this is a really dumb question, but until now I have always had people around to help get the boat of the day rigged and launched, and trailers have just not come into it. Is it realistic to think I can trailer, rig, and launch, say, a 15-18 footer from a ramp on my own? I am a reasonably fit woman in my mid 30s, but I would not call myself an athlete. I might be able to call on friends to help occasionally, but there is no permanently dedicated tote-and-carry crew/s.o. that I can depend on.

This site is intended to be a guide to those who are seeking to buy, build, or sail a pocket cruising sailboat. In my shopping around for a pocket cruiser, I found that there were few websites dedicated only to this type of boat. I thought I'd share what I found with other web cruisers. I'm defining pocket cruiser as a trailerable, easily launchable sailboat of 30 feet or less with a cabin that provides some sleeping quarters. These boats should be fairly easy to handle on the road behind typical cars. A smaller boat is less expensive to buy and maintain. Almost anyone can afford a used pocket cruiser, so ownership is open to almost anyone. I hope you enjoy your visit - Chip Please E-mail me or sign the guest book if you have any comments, suggestions for additions, etc....
