In the early 1930s, George Nissen observed trapeze artistes performing tricks when bouncing off the safety net. He made the first modern trampoline in his garage to reproduce this on a smaller scale and used it to help with his diving and tumbling activities. He formed a company to build trampolines for sale and used a variant of the Spanish word trampolin (diving board) as a trademark . He used the trampoline to entertain audiences and also let them participate in his demonstrations as part of his marketing strategy. These were the beginnings of a new sport. In the USA, trampolining was quickly introduced into school physical education programs and was also used in private entertainment centres. However, following a number of injuries and law suits caused by insufficient supervision and inadequate training, trampolining is now mostly conducted in specialist gyms with certified trainers. This has caused a large reduction in the number of competitive athletes in the United States and a consequent decline from the earlier American prominence in the sport. Elsewhere in the world the sport was most strongly adopted in Europe and former

    Trampolining
What is Trampolining? Trampolining is a relatively young sport originally derived from fitness training performed by servicemen and gymnasts. It has grown to Olympic status now and is a recognised discipline of Gymnastics worldwide. Trampoline can be broken down into four specialist disciplines. Trampoline (aka Euro)
Using a full sized (often called a Euro or Master Tramp) rectangular trampoline, athletes are able to perform a range of difficult jumping, twisting and tumbling manoeuvres. In sport the trampolinist performs a sequence of 10 tricks, with points scored for difficulty of each manoeuvre and their “form” (body position and neatness) during these skills.
Points will be deducted for not completing all 10 moves or for performing extra moves. Judging will stop if the trampolinist fails to complete a move correctly (lands badly or off the trampoline), or bounces without having performed a recognised move (double-bounce).
    Double-Mini
Double-mini is a relatively new form of trampolining involving running down a track (like a gymnastics vault), and then bouncing on a specially designed trampoline having two “bounce areas”, one slightly sloped at the front and a second flat area directly attached to it, followed by a padded landing mat.

Walrus skins
It has been said that the first type of trampolining was done by the Eskimos who used to toss each other up into the air on a Walrus skin something like the sheet used by firemen to catch people jumping out of the windows of houses which were on fire. There also is some evidence of people in England being tossed up into the air by a number of people holding a blanket. These may or may not be the true origins of the sport of trampolining but it is certain that in the early years of the 20th century there were stage acts which used a "bouncing bed" on the stage to amuse audiences. The bouncing bed was in reality a form of small trampoline covered by bedclothes on which the acrobats performed mostly comedy routines.

It was conducted as a separate sport for many years, then became an international Olympic event in 2000. Bouncing about on a trampoline is healthy and fun for all ages. Apart from firming body tone, this exercise helps develop spatial awareness which is a useful basic training for all sports containing acrobatic movements. Trampoline symmetry Trampolining (individual or synchronized) is an elite sport, a discipline symbolizing freedom, flying and space, harmoniously associated with boldness, elegance and precision. The multiple somersaults and twists at a height of about 8 meters require a fine technique, perfect body control and most aesthetic movements. The trampolining club is one of the largest in the region, established in 1989 under the guidance of head coach, Annette Parker. The roots of the club can be traced back to the early 1970s. (Indeed until 2008, we were still jumping on some of the original trampolines). In 2001 the club setup independently as a British Gymnastics club, and in 2008 (with the help of Awards for All funding) moved into new facilities at Harris Sports Centre and Lawrence Sherriff School. The club now boasts one of the most up-to-date facilities in the region with five Eurotramp GMEX Elite trampolines, overhead rig and full safety matting. A far cry from its beginnings in 1989! Happy to oblige tour operators calling for more ideas for extreme experiences such as bungee-jumping that aren't too costly to get at, I offer the "extreme trampolene". Its rebound system would be power-aided by hydraulic-ram technology or whatever. The height of bounce would be adjusted to the jumper with rewards snatchable at each level. Safety precautions would have to be extreme too as with bungee-jumping. rayfo , Oct 29 2000

Trampolining
A trampolining programme catering for children aged 5 plus runs throughout the year. We offer high quality instruction designed to develop body awareness, increase confidence and learn new skills in a fun and challenging environment. Currently two classes are offered, aimed primarily at beginners and intermediates showing you the correct techniques and giving you all the skills to perform basic moves and routines. Trampoline sessions are non-competitive and designed to allow the children to express a variety of movements using strength, technique and their own individual personalities. Children are assessed continuously and moved to the most suitable class for their ability. Our classes are taught in a group situation, normally one teacher for up to eight children. Lessons are structured to build up confidence within themselves whilst working towards improving style, ability and techniques. It is hoped that all participants will improve through the programme of lessons, however improvement cannot be guaranteed, as all learners are individuals with their own ability and experience. The lessons are undertaken with no guarantee of improvement. Pre-booking is essential as places are limited.
