Grandmaster Won Ik Yi has returned to the U.S. and just moved back to Austin Texas. The Grand Opening of the new Tukong Moosul Headquarters was September 4th 1999. The new address is 12200 Research Blvd Austin TX 78759 (512) 336-5425. The web site is Masteryi.com Grandmaster Yi is offering training to all levels of students, from beginners to extremely advanced. I am quite sure of the level of training offered there ~ The Best!
If you are in the Austin area this is one school I would strongly encourage you to check out. Call Grandmaster Yi for current information. Currently Grandmaster Yi is asssisted mainly by Ali Brown a Third Degree Black Belt. I started training wtih Ali when he was a nine year old. Now at 6 feet and a solid 175 pounds I keep hoping he forgot about the time I thrashed him on the floor. Just joking. Ali has turned into a fine young man and I know he is a very competent instructor. It has been great to reconnect with Ali and see his evolution. Master Cotton Hayes runs a very fine school in Odessa Texas. Master Hayes has been teaching various martial arts for over 25 years. He was the first person outside of Korea to be certified as a Master in Tukong Moosul. His style of teaching is unique, as is the man himself. Check out his Web-site for a different perspective on Martial Arts in general, and Tukong Moosul in particular. Master Hayes is an interesting paradox of an instructor, he is a no BS man that trains real hard, yet he has a soft and compassionate heart for all of his students and friends. As with each of the instructors in Tukong Moosul I am honored to consider him my friend

27. Master Yi's Tukong Moosul: Tukong History
Tukong Moosul is a complete martial arts system developed by Grandmaster Wonik Yi.
http://ustradingchina.com/history.php
The origin of the Dae Yeon Sa Temple can be traced to AD 1200 years. The first original Temple was Dae Yeon Am, meaning "Great Achievement Place". It was located in North Korea, and founded by Master Ji Suk along with two other masters. During this time the masters practiced Buddhism without the Martial Arts. It was only after Master Song Jae and Master Bup Kwang came to the temple that the practice of Martial Arts began around AD 1269. Several hundred years later, the temple moved to South Korea (1692) and the name changed from Dae Yeon Am to Dae Yeon Sa ("Great Achievement Temple"). At that time, three masters from China joined and continued to develop the Martial Arts. That is why the origin of the Tukong Moosul system is both a hard and soft style, a blending of Chinese and Korean techniques. In 1965, Grandmaster Wonik Yi went to the temple and began training in Buddhism and the Martial Arts. In Korea there are two types of Buddhist temples. One is similar to a church of missionary work and is open to all people. The other is solely for individuals who wish to seek self-enlightment. These temples are ones of sanctuary and privacy, and are not open for public visitation. A few of the temples in Korea choose the later type. The Dae Yeon Sa Temple is a very traditional temple that teaches Buddhism and Martial Arts. This is the tradition that is taught to the students of Tukong Moosul today.
Eun Kwang Bup Sa was born in 1895 and passed away in 1996 at the age of 101 years. He was headmaster of Dae Yeon Sa Temple from 1955 until his passing. Eun Kwang Bup Sa was Master Yi's Grandmaster and greatest mentor influencing, molding, and guiding Master Yi for the rest of his life.

My wife, 2 kids and I have all studied at the TUKONG Moosul North school under Mr. Lonnie Lepp. My wife Mary and I are both second degree black belt level. My daughter Carina reached blue belt at age 12, then stopped training to focus on her ballet and school. My son Daniel is red belt as of early 2000. Mary has also studied Ip Sun Tai Chi and has a first degree black belt in that style. She has run her own school in Lago Vista since 1987. She will be testing for her third degree in June of 2000. The Austin American Statesman ran an article on her on Friday, January 28, 2000.
TUKONG Moosul Federation
In 1963, Master Yi was placed in a Southern Korean monestary at the age of five, by his family who sought political refuge for him. During the time that Master Yi lived at the temple, he excelled in philosophy and martial art training. includine Oriental medical practices. He also learned respect, service, honor, humility, brotherhood and love. Later, Master Yi entered the Korean army. He was quickly recognized for his martial art skills and directed to create a new form or self-defense for the Korean Special Forces. He developed "TUKONG Moosul", or "Special Combat Warrior Technique'. After training more than 2.000 black bell students before his enlistment was up, he went on to win the World Martial Arts Championships in I979 and 1980.

Evolution
Well, every time I think I know what is happening in my ife, or what I am going to be doing it changes. That is nothing new. I am living in Rio Rancho New Mexico now. Working and writing a book about Oriental Medicine. I am training some, but not as much as I would like. That part never seems to change, though it does wax and wane as other things in my life take priority.
As always my training schedule will have to fit my current lifestyle and internal focus; yet as always when I train I am learning, living and growing.

It is widely used by South Korean special warfare units, such as the elite 707 Special Mission Battalion. The roots of Tukong run much deeper, its origins can be traced back many generations, to the Dae Yeon Sa Temple in South Korea. The martial artist practicing Tukong Moosul is trained in four areas, based upon the distance theory. The four areas include Throwing (leverage techniques), Punching (hand techniques), Kicking (foot techniques), and Weapons (extended body techniques).
The Dae Yeon Sa Temple has origins as early as 1200 CE. Dae Yeon Am, meaning "Great Achievement Place," was the predecessor to Dae Yeon Sa. Founded by Ji Suk and two other masters in North Korea, they practiced Buddhism without the Martial Arts. The arrival of Song Jae and Bup Kwang at the temple marked the establishment of Martial Arts at the temple around 1269 CE.
Around 1692, the temple was moved to South Korea and the name was changed from Dae Yeon Am to Dae Yeon Sa ("Great Achievement Temple"). From this point, three masters from China joined and continued to develop the Martial Arts being practiced at the temple. This explains why Tukong Moosul exhibits both hard and a soft styles (or external and internal styles). Strong undertones relating to Chinese Tai Chi were incorporated, and the internal form of Tukong Moosul known as Ip Sun was created, analogous to Chinese Tai Chi.

Combatives: Military Martial Arts
Part Tukong Moosul Tukong moosul takes its name from the elite Tu Kong (Special Combat) commando unit of the South Korean Army. As with the other military martial arts described in this article, the originators of tukong moosul strived to take the best of other martial arts and evolve the techniques into combat-oriented, effective training. Tukong incorporates techniques from other Korean arts like tae kwon do and hapkido , as well as judo and kung fu General Chang K. Oe, commander of the Tu Kong unit, enlisted Won Ik Yi from army headquarters and several top fighters from within the Tu Kong unit to develop the training. Won Ik Yi was trained in Shaolin-style martial arts as a child and incorporated many kung fu techniques in the original tukong moosul curriculum. Others, including Tukong Moosul Association Grandmaster In Ki Kim, one of the Tu Kong unit masters, have added techniques in more recent years. Tukong moosul, like other military martial arts, is all about taking out the enemy. Some of the tukong moosul organizations specifically prohibit children from learning tukong moosul, instead recommending that they study the sport-oriented tae kwon do instead.
