Safety gear includes ear protection usually in the form of a water polo cap , a mouthguard , and a glove for the playing hand (to protect against pool-bottom abrasion and, in some designs, knuckle protection against puck impact). Players may choose to wear a protective glove on both hands as the current rules permit a player to switch the stick between hands mid-play. The stick is relatively short (according to recent rules, not more than 350mm in length, including the handle) and is coloured white or black to indicate the player's team. In tournament play, the colour of the stick and cap are randomly assigned to each team before every game. The puck is approximately the size of an ice hockey puck but is made of lead or similar material (Adult size weighs 3 lb kg ), Junior 1 3/4

From ArticleWorld
There really is a sport called underwater hockey , or “octopush”, played by two teams that try to push a lead puck along the bottom of a swimming pool and into a submerged goal. The sport was invented in England in 1954. Spectators are allowed to wear snorkel gear, just like the players, and enter the pool to watch. Games are divided into two 10 or 15 minutes halves. edit
Playing basics
Each team has six players in the pool at any one time; three forwards and three defenders. Each player uses a small stick to push the puck – about the size of an ice hockey puck and weighing about three pounds – along the bottom of the pool. The idea is to advance the puck into the other team’s end of the pool and into the goal. The rules prohibit players without the puck to position themselves between a teammate with the puck and a defending player. There also are rules governing how the puck is passed so as to keep from players being injured. Each team is able to substitute. edit
What players wear
Players on each team are outfitted for playing the sport in a pool. Each players wears a mask, swim fins and snorkel. They wear caps similar to those worn by water polo players. Underwater hockey players also wear a glove or pair of gloves to protect their hands as they ass the puck along the bottom surface of the pool. Players also wear mouthguards.

Underwater hockey is played by having opposing teams line-up at opposite ends of the pool with a brass puck placed in the middle. When play begins, both teams move forward trying to bring the puck to the opposing teams goal line. Typical playing equipment includes: mask or goggles, fins and an underwater hockey stick. The Aquanauts provide all the equipment, but most players prefer to use their own eye protection. You might want to read the Aquanauts House Rules for underwater hockey The Aquanauts host underwater hockey for a number of reasons. The first reason being that it rocks! Another reason is that the games keep the Club members active during the slower diving seasons. Additionally, the regularly played games help keep us physically fit

UNDERWATER HOCKEY
RULES EQUIPMENT PLAYING THE GAME PHILOSOPHY ... Download 2010 USOA Hockey Waiver The rules are "non-contact" and players generally cover "zones" around the puck. Success (scoring) ultimately depends on teamwork, since no single person can hold their breath forever. Individual strength is less of an advantage than it is in many other sports. The water nullifies pure mass advantage and emphasizes clever use of torque. In competition, games are two 15 minute halves, and teams can have up to 4 substitutes on the deck who can enter play on the fly. RULES The rules of the game inhibit the use of brute force and allow small people to compete effectively and equally with larger people. Play is solely on the bottom of the pool so your effectiveness is also governed by how much time you spend on the bottom ... the air is, of course, on the top. In the game, exertion usually shortens bottom time to less than 30 seconds. The sport is defined as non-contact in the same way basketball is considered non-contact. The person in control of the puck can not be physically pushed but also may not charge into set opponents. Rules are simple - no body contact unless your stick is on the puck (i.e., no forechecking or moving screens), no touching the puck with anything but your stick, and no detaining or obstructing another player (even if you do have the puck) by pulling off their mask or fins or holding on to them.
