Underwater Hockey
Underwater hockey is a very fast moving game that quickly builds swimming and free diving capability. It is played on the bottom of a swimming pool by two coed teams of three to six. Players wear fins, mask, snorkel, and a protective glove and headgear. The stick is short, approximately 1 foot long, the puck is heavy, around 3 lb., and the goal is 3 meters (9') long. The rules are "non-contact" and players generally cover "zones" around the puck. Success (scoring) ultimately depends on teamwork, since no single person can hold their breath forever. Individual strength is less of an advantage than it is in many other sports. The water nullifies pure mass advantage and emphasizes clever use of torque.

Mason Underwater Hockey Club
George Mason University - Underwater Hockey Club
Welcome to George Mason Underwater Hockey!
We are a club sport at GMU that combines the skills of swimming, snorkeling, and team strategy into a fast paced game played on the bottom of a pool. The GMU club is one of about 10 university underwater hockey programs in the United States. We field a competitive team during both the spring and fall semesters, and participate in the U.S. national underwater hockey tournament over the summer. All GMU students are welcome at our practices regardless of skill level. We play in 6-8 feet of water using short wooden sticks and a weighted puck. As with regular hockey, the object is to score on the opposing team's goal. We have snorkels, masks, fins, and sticks available at the pool, or you may bring your own if you prefer. We play twice a week in the GMU competition pool, and join up with the Washington D.C. UWH club, the Beltway Bottomfeeders, for two weekly practices at other pools in the D.C. area.
GMU Underwater Hockey Class
Want to earn credits by playing Underwater Hockey? GMU also offers an introductory class in Underwater Hockey - PHED 158 (CRN # 73988). The class meets at the same time as our Tuesday practice. While it is not mandatory for participation, the class offers an excellent opportunity for those wishing to take their game to the next level.

Introduction To Caversham and Henley Octopush Club
  • For those of you who are new to Octopush / Underwater Hockey, or have found this page by accident while looking for new and exciting water sports to try. We provide players in the Henley (Oxfordshire), Caversham, Newbury and Reading (Berkshire) areas with the opportunity to try an exciting underwater sport. To play the game of Octopush or Underwater Hockey you need a mask, snorkel, fins (flippers), protective glove, a small stick and a lead puck. So if you looking for the ultimate keep fit sport (swimming with a purpose) then come along and have a go. We can help you out with all the snorkelling equipment until you are sure you like the game. All you need to bring is your swimwear and a pair of old socks. Most of us will be found unwinding after a match or a club night session in a nearby pub !! Underwater hockey is probably one of the most exciting sports that you can play. We provide swimmers, divers, water polo and beginners the chance to try this exciting team water sport.

Octopush at Sunstar
Search Sunstar: Octopush is a lively game that we sometimes play in Ipswich on Monday pool nights. The dedicated players formed the Ipswich Octopush Club and interested Octopush players should contact them if your interest is primarily in the game. Any Sunstar member can play and we are always keen to welcome new players who have never played before. If you would like to join in, please turn up at 8.20pm so we can start at 8.30 and play until 8.50pm. If you are not playing please wait until Octopush has finished before entering the water. Everybody is welcome to play and I have enough hats and bats for at least 8 players (we have substitutes and swap round if we have more). The hats are essential as they have plastic ear defenders built-in. You must not enter the pool without a hat during an Octopush game. Gloves are also useful as they save you scraping your knuckles on the bottom of the pool. If you have your own bats or gloves please bring them along. Pool fins are essential as they are smaller and less dangerous than sea fins... It is very good practice for snorkelling and it certainly helps to keep you fit although the first few weeks should be fairly gentle.

What is it?
Think of hockey played in a swimming pool. Didn't help much did it? Underwater hockey (AKA Octopush) is a fast action, largely non-contact game played on the bottom of a pool. Two teams of six players pit their wits, and lungs, against each other and try to score goals by pushing or flicking the puck into their opponents goal.
What equipment will I need?
At first, just basic snorkelling gear (mask, fins, and snorkel). Once you're hooked you'll want to get your own pusher (the stick), a hat and some kind of protective glove.
When do you play?
Friday nights at Dalry Pool (About 5 mins walk from Haymarket Station) Junior session Adult session If it's your first time, come along for the junior session. Don't worry if you don't have any equipment.

History of UWH - UWH in New Zealand Underwater Hockey in NZ
The Real Beginning Just how long has this sport been played in NZ? Jennifer Bailey found the following extract in an issue of "Dive" magazine in May/June 1963: Nelson Club report their development of a new sport "Underwater Hockey" played on their "baths night". Two teams of six snorkelers struggle to move a 3lb lead puck along the bottom towards goal posts set three feet apart at each end of the pool. Two halves of equal periods are played; the length of time usually being arranged between the teams. After each goal is scored there is a two minute break, and the team also change ends as scoring is usually more prolific at the shallow end of the pool. There are two referees, one in the pool and the other on the pool surround. There are few rules to be broken; the things banned being mask and flipper pulling, touching the puck with the hands, too many men in the water, and unnecessary roughness. All other manoevres are permitted, state the rules. If a player breaks the rules he can be taken out of the game for two minutes, and after 5 offences he is out altogether. Underwater Hockey has, in Nelson at least, been played for more than 30 years. Now who can beat that?
