Join us for noncompetitive trail riding, workshops, and fun off-road competition this October in Santa Cruz, California. The California Mountain Unicycle Weekend is the first event of its kind, and this will be our fourth annual event! HOSTS: Your hosts this year are Bruce Bundy and David Poznanter of Santa Cruz, who will be mapping out various routes for beginning, advanced, and in-between riders. Bruce has the up-to-the-minute MUni Weekend information page at . Above is an example of a scenic Santa Cruz trail with Bruce and Nathan Hoover on it. BEACH BOARDWALK: No trip to Santa Cruz is complete (to me) without a visit to the Boardwalk and a ride on the famous Giant Dipper roller coaster , which is celebrating its 75th year. We have left a space in the schedule to allow us to go there for a ride. COMPETITIONS: They have always been popular in the past, and we'll have some here too. There will be an Observed Trials competition and an uphill race, with novice and expert courses.

Learning to Ride a Unicycle: First Steps for the Cycling Enthusiast
OK, you've got a reason; now you need a unicycle. But first, it's best to check whether you already have one. Because, be honest with yourself, stranger things have happened. And if you do have one, confirm that it is a good one to learn on. Does it have a 20-inch wheel (minimum)? Is the wheel NOT made of solid rubber? Is the unicycle less than 40 years old? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then leave it hanging in your garage for another 40 years.
Get yourself a decent unicycle. Check Craigslist the morning of the day you decide to buy a unicycle. If you live in a sufficiently large metropolitan area stocked with odd characters, there will be a fully functional, previously owned unicycle offered at a reasonable price in the neighborhood of your office. Buy it if the owners seem nice. Because really, what other criteria are you going to use?

So you ve never heard of Mountain unicycling? is the title of this group of FAQs provided to beginners.
    http://www.unicycling.com/brett/e_muni/newquest.html
So you've never heard of a Mountain Unicycle?
    A little Q and A
Yes that's right, Mountain Unicycling, and no I'm not kidding. You've probably seen a couple pictures by now, and you probably have a bunch of funky questions. With almost a decade of unicycling and a couple years of mountain unicycling under my belt, I'd like to claim that I've heard them all (but I'm always surprised). So here's a few questions I get a lot along with some answers.
Q: Does that take a lot of Balance
A: Yes, otherwise I'd fall off (OK that's the smart mouth answer)
Q: Are you in the circus?
A: No, are you? (That's a smart mouth answer too).
I wouldn't ask a unicyclist this question. To say its a big fat put down is an understatement. You might end up with a unicycle where the sun don't shine. More serious questions:
Q: How do you stop? (there aren't any brakes on a unicycle)
A: You just stop pedaling. A unicycle is direct drive. Direct drive means that the pedals are attached directly to the axle no gears, no chain, no brakes, etc (look at this picture ). So to stop, all you have to do is stop pedaling. Its kinda like walking you don't need brakes to stop walking, you just stop stepping and wala, you stop.

    Learning to Ride a Unicycle
I've seen people learn to cycle unaided in as little as 4 hours but those people are complete naturals. The people fastest to learn are usually the fearless kind who can already roller-blade, ski, windsurf etc but personally being a mere normal mortal with no other sporting skills to speak of and a complete wimp at these things, I didn't let go of the fence/rail/someone's hand until I had been riding for more than 20 hours spread over several months but most people learn faster.

The aim of the sport is to use natural/urban/specially made obstacles such as ledges, handrails and stairs in a given area to perform tricks that look good. The emphasis falls on technical proficiency, style and creativity. Street unicycling draws inspiration from skateboarding and bmx bike riding, with many similar tricks. For street unicycling, most riders prefer to ride 20" trials unicycles because of their superb hopping abilities and their smooth maneuverability. However, some riders have been known to prefer using the less conventional 24" wheelsize for street riding.

Beijing, China China Unicycle Association (CUA) The China Unicycle Association (CUA) is the official government organization coordinating and organizing unicycling activities in China. In Chinese, it is actually referred to as the "Unicycle Committee" under the Chinese Cycling Association, which is part of the Ministry of Physical Education (?). But upon my advice the name has been changed since "committee" has the wrong implication in English. I must stress very strongly that the CUA we are talking about is an official government organization that has absolutely nothing to do with the former CUA, of exactly the same name, run by Zhao Yanyang at the time the Great Wall Unicycling Marathon was held in 1993. The CUA is heavily involved in promoting unicycling in Chinese schools, and was responsible for organizing the China Team to Unicon IX in Germany. They already held five national Chinese meets. It is important to point out that the Chinese competiton rules are very similar to the IUF rules. They have translated the IUF rule book into Chinese and have studied it closely. CUA Vice Chairman

They are intended to encourage unicyclists to progress at an even pace over a wide variety of unicycling skills. These levels are not connected to the competition rules, other than in descriptions of how the skills are to be performed. Skill levels are useful for helping riders determine a sequence of skills to learn, and to give them ideas for things to try. Eligibility: In order to be eligible to achieve a level a rider must have passed all previous levels. Riders must get into and out of all skills: All riding skills start with the rider riding forward, seated with both feet on the pedals except for side ride (level 10). All skills end with rider riding forward at least 3 full revolutions of the wheel, seated with both feet on the pedals. Maximum of three mistakes per level: In order to pass an exam a rider must perform all skills in that level at the first attempt, except for a maximum of three skills that must be performed at the second attempt. This allows for three mistakes per level, but no more than one mistake per skill. Explanation of Skills: The correct execution of the skills is described in Standard Skill Descriptions , section 7.2 in the

    Unicycling
Unicon is the Olympics of Unicycling, with many different disciplines represented. If you thought unicycling was all about juggling and clowns, then Unicon will open you up to a whole new world. Here is a quick guide to the different types of Unicycling you will see at Unicon: Artistic Freestyle This is like figure skating, but on a unicycle. Competitors compete in individual, pairs and group routines, which are set to music. Each 3min routine is performed in front of a panel of judges, and are marked according to their artistic performance, skill difficulty, execution, and originality. Competitors do a variety of tricks including pirouettes, spins and glides just like figure skating. Track and Field These are events held on an athletics track. As well as traditional athletics style races like 100m, 400m and 1600m, there are unicycle specific races like one-foot, backwards and gliding races. There are also high-jump and long-jump events. Mountain-Unicycling
Just like mountainbiking, but done on one wheel. Competitors ride unicycles equipped with mountainbike tyres and wheels, and race in downhill, hillclimb and cross-country.  You can ride anywhere a regular bicycle can!
