Seven players from each team (six field players and a goalkeeper) are allowed in the playing area of the pool during game play. Visiting team field players wear numbered and usually blue caps, and home team field players wear usually white caps (though any other contrasting colors are now allowed); both goalies wear red caps, numbered "1". Both teams may substitute players while the ball is in their possession. During game play, players enter and exit in the corner of the pool, or in front of their goal; when play is stopped, they may enter or exit anywhere. The game is divided into four periods; the length depends on the level of play: Level of play Team level Time each period Authority Croatian Water Polo League National 10 minutes HVS FINA Water Polo World League National 8 minutes FINA Olympics National 8 minutes IOC Senior club play Club 8 minutes FINA US College Varsity 8 minutes NCAA US College Club 7 minutes CWPA US High School Varsity 7 minutes NFHS US High School Junior Varsity 6 minutes NFHS US High School Freshman Sophomore 5 minutes NFHS USA water polo 5 minutes The game clock is stopped when the ball is not 'in play' (between a foul being committed and the free throw being taken, and between a goal being scored and the restart). As a result, the average quarter lasts around 12 minutes 'real time'. A team may not have possession of the ball for longer than 30 seconds

Basic skills
  • Swimming : Water polo is a team water sport requiring an ability to swim. Field players must swim end to end of a 30-meter pool non-stop many times during a game without touching the sides or bottom of the pool. The front crawl stroke used in water polo differs from the usual swimming style in that water polo players swim with the head out of water at all times to observe the field. The arm stroke used is also a lot shorter and quicker and is used to protect the ball at all times. Backstroke is used by defending field players to track advancing attackers and by the goalie to track the ball after passing. Water polo backstroke differs from swimming backstroke; the player sits almost upright in the water, using eggbeater leg motions with short arm strokes to the side instead of long straight arm strokes. This allows the player to see the play and quickly switch positions. It also allows the player to quickly catch an on coming pass with a free hand.

Water Polo
From LoveToKnow 1911
WATER POLO a game which has done much to advance swimming in popular favour and to improve the stamina of swimmers. It is played either in a bath or open water, the teams consisting of seven a side. The field of play must not exceed 30 yds. or be less than 19 yds. in length, and the width must not be more than 20 yds. The ball used must be round and fully inflated, and must not measure less than 262, nor more than 28 in. in circumference. It must be waterproof, with no strapped seams outside, and no grease or other objectionable substance placed on it. The goals must be io ft. in width, with a cross- bar 3 ft. above the surface when the water is 5 ft. or over in depth, and 8 ft. from the bottom when the water is less than 5 ft. in depth; in no case must the water in which a game is played be less than 3 ft. Goal nets are used in all important matches. The duration of a match is supposed to be 14 minutes, seven minutes each way. The officials consist of a referee , a timekeeper and two goal scorers, the first-named official starting the game by throwing the ball into the centre of the bath. A goal is scored by the entire ball passing between the goal posts and under the cross-bar. The players have to place themselves in a line with their respective goals, and are not allowed to start swimming to the centre of the bath until the word "Go" is given. They are usually divided into 3 'forwards, I half-back, 2 backs and a goalkeeper. To the fastest swimmer is usually assigned the place of centre-forward, and it is his duty to make all headway possible so as to reach the ball before the opposing forward of the other side, then pass rapidly back to the half or one of the backs and swim on to within close proximity of the opponent's goal and wait for a pass. The other forwards should rapidly follow him up and each man carefully

Readers' Comments: "Finally! A guide to the game that is clear and concise without all of the 'official' mumbo jumbo that is in the NCAA rulebooks and manuals. My daughter is in her third year playing high school water polo and I know this guide will help not only me, but many of our parents. For the last 2 years Ive been wishing for a guide like this one. The examples are straight forward and clear. I will definitely pass this on. Thank you!" (D.B., 1/18/2005) "I would like to thank you for the time and effort you have taken in putting together this user manual to water polo. I have been watching water polo for more than 8 year now and until I discovered your manual I did not understand many of the rules. I have a copy that I keep with me at all times. I have provided copies to friends to enjoy. You have made this complex game into a much simpler game with your down to earth explanation of the rules. I applaud you for taking the time to write this manual for those that do not understand the game." (F.S., 5/14/2007)
