Welcome to the Bluebirds Wheelchair Basketball Website Thank you for visiting us, and we hope that in the future we will have many interesting items on this site, which will give you an insight into the exciting world of the Bluebirds Wheelchair Basketbal Team. The Bluebirds started in 1995 as result of Gordon Perry's Wheelchair Basketball Roadshow which passed through the London area. This show encouraged interest in Wheelchair Basketball. Many other teams have also been set up by this show all over the UK. We have two teams within the Bluebirds, the first team are in the Third Division South East of the National Basketball League. Our other team has just been set up and is in the Development League which is where all new teams must start, even though some of them have played before. We also are lucky enough to have a Great Britain Junior player. We are partly sponsored by grants and fund raising, and are always on the look out for new sponsors, as well as new players. So if you are interested in either of the above, please contact us at l.grayson@waacis.edex.co.uk

Overview
Special Events News The Sport ... Newsletter The Sport : Basic Rules of the Game The rules for wheelchair basketball vary little from those of stand up basketball. In Canada, FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules are used with minor changes to reflect the use of a wheelchair as defined by the IWBF or International Wheelchair Basketball Federation. Only a few adaptations are made for the mechanics of wheelchair motion and the necessity to play from a sitting, rather than a standing position. The adaptations do not change the way the sport is played, but instead are used to interpret the rules affected by the use of a wheelchair. Who Can Play? Basic Rules General Programs Classification System Wheelchair Basketball is played on a standard sized basketball court. For adults, the height of the basket, distance to the foul line, three-point line, etc., are the same measurements as in the game of stand up basketball. For juniors, some programs offer lower hoop heights to ensure that they have a positive experience. The game is played by five players from two opposing teams, in four quarters of 10 minutes each. There is a 24-second shot clock, which means a team must shoot at the basket within 24 seconds of gaining possession of the ball.

Wheelchair basketball.
A sport played primarily by people with disabilities. It is based on standard basketball with some adaptations to reflect the presence of the wheelchair. All teams which compete above a recreational level use a classification system to evaluate the functional abilities of players on a point scale of 1 to 4.5. In places where teams are integrated, able-bodied athletes would be classified as a 5, and an individual with the highest degree of disability (such as full paraplegia below the chest) would have the classification of 1.0. Classification is an international regulation for playing wheelchair basketball, where competitions restrict the number of points allowable on the court at one time. However, at this time, athletes are only allowed to compete internationally if they have a disability.
Wheelchair basketball retains most major rules and scoring of FIBA basketball, and maintains a 10-foot basketball hoop and standard basketball court. The exceptions are rules which have been modified with consideration for the wheelchair. For example, "travelling" in wheelchair basketball occurs when the athlete touches his wheels more than twice after receiving or dribbling the ball. The individual must pass, bounce or shoot the ball before he or she can touch their wheels again.
