A picture of the Olympic flag. (Photo by Tony Duffy / Getty Images) zSB(3,3) According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. Yet the first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE (though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already). At this Olympic Games, a naked runner, Coroebus (a cook from Elis), won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade - a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first Olympic champion in history. The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.

Origin The origin of the Olympic Games is linked with many myths referred to in ancient sources but in the historic years their founder is said to be Oxylos whose descendant Ifitos later rejuvenated the games. According to tradition, the Olympic Games began in 776 BC when Ifitos made a treaty with Lycourgos the king and famous legislator of Sparta and Cleisthenes the king of Pissa. The text of the treaty was written on a disc kept in the Heraion. In this treaty, that was the decisive event for the development of the sanctuary as a Panhellenic center, the "sacred truce" was agreed, the ceasing of fighting in all of the Greek world for as long as the Olympic Games were on. As a reward for the victors the cotinus, which was a wreath made from a branch of wild olive tree that was growing next to the opisthodomus of the temple of Zeus in the sacred Altis, was established after an order of the Delphic oracle.

// zoneId = textEntitlement document.write(''); This athletic festival originated in ancient Greece and was revived in the late 19th century. Before the 1970s the Games were officially limited to competitors with amateur status, but in the 1980s many events were opened to professional athletes. Currently the Games are open to all, even the top professional athletes in basketball and football (soccer). The ancient Olympic Games included several of the sports that are now part of the Summer Games program, which at times has included events in as many as 32 different sports. In 1924 the Winter Games were sanctioned for winter sports. The Olympic Games have come to be regarded as the world's foremost sports competition. More to Explore

Today, a luge is used to transport an individual or two person team down an icy track comprised of multiple curves at speedsoif 85 mph, no brakes included. The luge itself is composed of an aerodynamic racing shell suspended from two bridges that connect to the runners, or kufens The only parts of the sled that touch the ice are the two runners called steels, which are attached to the kufens There are built in grips for each hand. The athletes, called 'sliders,' wear aerodynamic racing suits and helmets with clear or tinted visors that extend under the chin to further reduce resistance. They are required to wear special zippered shoes that straighten the foot when the zipper is closed.
