Of course, sport is more than the games themselves, it also involves athletes, and traditional philosophical arguments about mind and body have been deftly applied to sport. In his 1990 book Philosophy of Sport, Drew Hyland considered the three positions of dualism, physicalism, and phenomenology. Although dualism has been the dominant view in Western philosophy, sports enthusiasts resisted its tendency to privilege mind over body and thereby to denigrate sport. Physicalism had more surface appeal, but tended to view the human being as a machine. Phenomenology, which focuses on the experience of the lived body, was Hyland’s preferred approach to the question for athletes. Now the view of a person as both mind and body, dubbed “holism” is the most popular metaphysical theory in the philosophy of sport.
edit Ethics
Morality in sports competition involves more than rule-obedience. The interpersonal nature of competition itself implies certain moral obligations. In Fair Play: Sport, Values, and Society (1991) Robert Simon defines athletic competition as a “mutual quest for excellence” that is ultimately cooperative and therefore carries the obligation to provide a good test for one’s opponent. Violence, defined as the intent to harm or disable one’s opponent, is unethical on this model because it interferes with the cooperative quest for excellence. Aggressive but clean checking in hockey may be part of the game, but preventing a competitor from being able to test his skills is not acceptable. This is a problem for the sport of boxing insofar as its lusory goal—the knock out—just is the violent disabling of ones opponent.

Online Resources Texts: Philosophy of Sport Used Books: Philosophy of Sport Know of a Resource? ... Life Through the Earholes of Our Youth by Ken Burger (Editor), David Lissy (Photographer). Beyond the scores: Ken Burger's first book is about real life! In between all the games and stuff, every now and then Ken has written an article about the experiences he had with sports when he was a kid. A great deal of it concerns the struggles we all go through and where sports fits into our lives as young people... From the Author: The focus for this book emerged as I pored over a decade's worth of sports columns-more than 200 a year-and discovered that the ones I liked most reflected personal thoughts and feelings. A lot of it has to do with my youth and my kids- the personal stuff I've written about over the years. It's about real life. Some of the columns are about my own kids. Some deal with alcoholism and other things I've personally gone through. I've had people tell me that the only reason they pick up the sports page is to read a column that will draw them into something beyond the scores. I look at writing as a journey through all this stuff.

      • Schedule Roster ... Results/History Aicinena's Coaching Philosophy Coach Aicinena's Philosophy I spend a lot of time thinking about what is important and what is valuable and true. Because of this fact, I have developed a philosophy of sport and of life. They go hand in hand. Since I don't wish to bore you (at least not before you are in my class), I will provide a brief statement concerning my philosophy of sport and life respectively. Philosophy of Sport I love sport. It offers an opportunity to compete - to test oneself. As a test, sport (volleyball) offers you an opportunity to compare your skills as a player and to both test and develop your character. A lot is said about sport building character. I do not agree that character development just happens as a result of sport participation. You must modify your behavior/character as you are confronted with conflict in the sport setting. For example, when you play poorly, you must maintain your composure on the court. Character development only happens in this example if you slowly improve your ability to maintain your composure when adversity strikes. If you do not make an effort, change for the good does not happen. Participation in sport can improve your character only if you choose for it to and only with guidance. I believe that sport participation should make you a better person and that this can only happen as a result of the efforts of both you and me. Though I think that sport is and should be important to you, I do not believe that it is or should be the most important part of your life. Sport should be thought of only as a part of what you are, who you are, and of what you do. Any part of your life should be thought of in this way because you serve in many roles. All of them should be important, but if sport dominates your thoughts and your time, there will soon come an end to your participation, leaving a void that may never be filled. I devote a lot of time to volleyball, but I must also devote time to teaching, to administration, to my family and to others. Volleyball cannot consume the majority of my time, or the majority of my mental or physical energies. Likewise, student athletes have many roles. The role of athlete is but one of them.
