ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WEB-BASED TUTORIALS:
Increasingly, the Internet is being used to deliver online courses and content to help enhance learning in offline courses. In science, and in particular physics, this use has included online activities that were meant to replace homework and sometimes laboratories. As a result, there is a growing demand for systematic assessment of the effectiveness of the Web-delivered learning environments. Our group is conducting experiments focusing on the efficacy of Web-delivered visualization tutorials designed to teach kinematics and optics.
In our research, we get volunteers to complete media enhanced interactive tutorials and we compare their performance and attitude to a volunteer control group. We also examine the student interaction with the various elements of the tutorial by examining logs and by videotaping them. Along with these experiments, we have been collecting Force Concept Inventory data since Fall 1998 semester. We are hoping that this data will provide us with a baseline data for future research.
We attempt to base our tutorials on results already published by the Physics education research community as well as results published by other education researchers.

Physics Education Research Group Contact(s): Beatty, Ian D. During 2008-2009, PERG (a.k.a. UMPERG) is transitioning from UMass to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro , where it joins the UNCG PERG is a team of physicists studying knowledge, cognition, learning, and teaching about physics and other sciences. We investigate fundamental questions in the cognitive science of physics learning and expertise; develop pedagogic techniques and curricula; and promote effective instruction within our university and around the world. PERG was founded by Prof. William Gerace, a theoretical nuclear physicist, who began research into physics education in 1976. He was joined in turn by Jose Mestre, Robert Dufresne, and William Leonard, all of whom completed doctoral dissertations in theoretical nuclear physics before joining the educational research effort. Ian Beatty joined later, completing a Physics Ph.D. with a dissertation in physics education research. Over the years, UMPERG has employed and worked with many undergraduate and graduate students. UMPERG was originally a research group within the UMass Department of Physics as well as a founding element of SRRI; in later years, it was solely affiliated with SRRI.

Welcome to Physical Education
Our office offers a variety of physical education classes for undergraduate students to complete the swim requirement and the 8 point General Institute Requirement. The swim requirement can be met by completing a beginner swim class or electing to test out. Classes generally meet twice a week for 40 minutes. The program administers over 40 different class sessions beginning every six weeks during the academic year.

SB 530: Physical Activity Requirements for
Public School Students Students below sixth grade are required to participate in moderate or vigorous daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes throughout the school year If a school district determines, for any particular grade level below sixth grade, that this requirement is impractical due to scheduling concerns or other factors, students in that grade level may participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least 135 minutes during each school week. Districts that use block scheduling, may as an alternative require students to participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least 225 minutes during each two-week school period.

The history of physical education reflects people's attitudes about physicalactivity. From prehistoric times, because survival was related to physical stamina and to people's ability to find food, no separate physical fitness programs were needed. Gradually, ancient societies in China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome adopted physical education as part of military training. As the more developed societies came to value the scholarly life, physical education lost favor. Many developed countries have had to strike a balance between physical and intellectual interests. The history of physical education frequently shows a pattern of military, social, and political influence. In one high point of ancient history, Athenian Greeks came to the forefront in the era 700 to 600 B.C. with their quest for physical and intellectual perfection. In numerous festivals, Athenians celebrated the beautyof the human form in dance, art, religious rites, and athletics. Athenians honored the gods of Olympus, especially Zeus, with the first Olympic Games. The Olympic Games offered a civilizing influence, with social class disregardedand all citizens judged on athletic competition. If a war was being fought,it was halted during the Olympic Games. Many historians regard Athenian culture as the height of early physical education, but like their Chinese predecessors, the Athenians felt the competing influence of intellectualism.

A child who is truly healthy is healthy in body, mind, and spirit. Physical health means more than just the absence of disease. It means having a body that is strong, flexible, and coordinated, and having the skills to use that body in joyful ways. If you watch three- and four-year-old children, many of them already demonstrate these fundamentals of physical health. But as children get older and spend long hours sitting in schools and doing homework , physical fitness declines, and many of them slip into an inactive, unhealthy lifestyle.
In the United States, as well as many other places in the world, there's a growing awareness of the health risks posed by inactivity and being overweight. It is commonplace for people to talk about an epidemic of childhood obesity. One cause may be a decline in physical education in schools. In the past, it was common for public schools to require daily physical education. Recently, however, the number of children who have daily P.E. has dropped, so that, as of 1996, only 19 percent of high school students have at least 20 minutes of physical education a day, and fewer than half of all middle schools require three years of P.E.
