Computational Physics Education
This web-server is maintained for the purposes of several computational physics classes at Michigan State University . It is intended to give information to students and the faculty involved in teaching computational physics. The webserver is not intended to replace the main Physics Department server , but rather provide web-tools experience to interested students and faculty and enable some more serious computational services that require the use of our main Linux teaching cluster in Giltner Hall , room 346.
The following course web-pages are referenced and partly hosted on this server:

This server will soon be ported to the Linux server in Giltner 346 , gauss, and thus integrate more closely teaching instruction with the web. The web-server is maintained by Aleksandar Donev , supervised by Dr. Phil Duxbury , with valuable help from Computer Services and others involved.

Simple Machines:
These devices were all in common use for centuries before Leonardo's time. Each one makes work easier to do by providing some trade-off between the force applied and the distance over which the force is applied.
    Wheel and Axle
In this machine a wheel or spoke is locked to a central axle so that when one is turned the other must turn. A longer motion at the edge of the wheel is converted to a shorter more powerful motion at the axle. In reverse, a short powerful force at the axle will move the wheel's edge a greater distance.
    Pulley System
A single pulley simply reverses the direction of a force. When two or more pulleys are connected together, they permit a heavy load to be lifted with less force. The trade-off is that the end of the rope must move a greater distance than the load.
A wedge converts motion in one direction into a splitting motion that acts at right angles to the blade. Nearly all cutting machines use the wedge. A lifting machine may use a wedge to get under a load.
A screw is a central core with a thread or groove wrapped around it to form a helix. While turning, a screw converts a rotary motion into a forward or backward motion.

The New Physical Education by Robert Rickover The first part of the program described one important aspect of the New PE: fewer competitive activities (dodge ball was cited as a prime example) and more activities that emphasize personal achievement such as rock-climbing, kick-boxing and tai-chi. So far so good, I thought. While rock-climbing and kick-boxing probably would not have appealed to me, I think I would have enjoyed tai-chi, and probably benefited a great deal from it. But then, in the second part of the program, the whole question of evaluation and measurement was introduced. How are kids in the New PE programs to be graded? One approach, already in use in one Seattle school, involved attaching tiny heart rate monitors to the children during class. Then, when the class was over, the teacher could check the read outs and determine just how much effort each child had made, and grade accordingly. So much for minimizing strategies of the sort I had perfected!

Misunderstood things in physics with simple explanations.
Welcome to Prompted by and dedicated to all those who know so little about physics – the fun subject!

76. Static Electricity Static Control Explanation And Techniques To Control The Phen
Scientific explanation of the phenomenon of static electricity.
Home Products Contact Us
STATIC ELECTRICITY: Denoting or pertaining to electricity at rest. How simple and inadequate this definition is of a phenomenon that creates problems which cost industry billions of dollars per year. A clearer understanding can be gained by explaining lightning. Static electricity in the atmosphere remains at rest until the potential gradient, between clouds, reaches a level that causes the insulator between clouds, in this case air, to break down or fail, and lightning is created to equalize the potential gradient. For the brief instant the lightning flashes, the static electricity is no longer at rest. What do we know about this phenomenon called "static electricity"? What is it and how do we get rid of it or at least control it? Well, let's examine it. CAUSE
See figure below.
Some materials such as glass, hair, and Nylon tend to give up electrons and become positively charged. Other materials such as Polypropylene, Vinyl (PVC), Silicon, Teflon, Silicone tend to collect electrons and become negatively charged. The Triboelectric series is a listing of various materials and there tendency to charge positive or negative. CONDUCTIVITY Passive Solutions INDUCTION
Removing or neutralizing static electricity by induction is the simplest and oldest method. Tinsel is the most common tool for this application. However, tinsel is oftentimes misused and, therefore, oftentimes not successful. The first thing that must be recognized is the fact that any induction device, such as tinsel, will never reduce or neutralize static electricity to the zero potential level. This is due to the fact that a threshold or beginning voltage is required to "start" the process.

Physical Education is offered as a Revision Course at SEC level. Since this is a revision course, students applying for this course must have already sat for the SEC examination in Physical Education. When applying for this course they must present the mark for their portfolio together with the SEC examination result. Besides the SEC Revision Course, the Physical Education department offers all students the opportunity to take part in various sports activities. Students are encouraged to make use of sports facilities when they do not have lectures and during mid-day break.

Activity, recreation, and theory offerings in the Department of Physical Education instruct students in areas that provide lifelong enrichment. Intramural, indoor and outdoor recreation, and other noncredit opportunities are available but are not listed in the catalog. Practicum credit, which counts toward graduation, is offered for the activity program, which includes instructional courses (Physical Education 100), intercollegiate sports, and performance groups (Physical Education 101). Academic credit is given for physical education theory courses, which are open to all students. These courses are specifically useful to those students planning careers in teaching, youth activities, or coaching. Students are provided an opportunity to obtain two levels of coaching authorization. Level I authorization is designed to develop the skills necessary to coach specific sports from grades K through 12 and will include certification through the American Sport Education Program (ASEP). Level II authorization provides more in-depth preparation and additional theoretical coursework.

But what exactly is an atom? What is it made of? What does it look like? The pursuit of the structure of the atom has married many areas of chemistry and physics in perhaps one of the greatest contributions of modern science.
In this article, we will follow this fascinating story of how discoveries in various fields of science resulted in our modern view of the atom. We will look at the consequences of knowing the atom's structure and how this structure will lead to new technologies.
