Posted on October 30, 2010 by Kevin 2 Comments Thanks to Mojo I have my first Strausburg card.
I hope the kid recovers. I doubt he will ever be what he was this last summer, hopefully he proves me wrong I remember watching his first game with my son and pausing my DVR and rewinding to watch a few of his pitches. The speed and movement he had was absurd. Watching him I couldn’t help but think he had to be at high risk for an injury. That is just too much torque to put on an arm and not have something pop. I am glad to have one of his cards in my collection, and hopeful he is a star again someday. Thanks Mojo, as always you are the man. -K- Posted in Uncategorized

I am sure I not the only one that does this, but somehow it makes me feel dirty. This year I am torn. On the NL side we have Buster Posey from the Giants.

They typically consist of a picture of a player on one side, with statistics or other information on the reverse. Cards have been produced featuring most major sports, especially those played in North America. Baseball cards remain the most widely collected form of sports card, although football, basketball, and hockey cards are also widely collected. Sets of cards are issued with each season for major professional sports featuring mostly professional athletes. Amateurs appear only rarely, usually on cards produced or authorized by the institution they compete for The latest trends in the hobby have been cards, which usually feature a piece of a player's jersey worn in a real professional game; or pieces of bats, balls, hats, helmets, and floors. Authenticated autographs are also popular, as are produced in much fewer amounts than regular base set cards.

Lee Thomas
Lee Thomas started his career in the minors with the Yankees in 1955. In 1961 he finally broke into the majors; however, after only playing two games for New York, he was traded to the Angels, which was a new expansion team that year. After a couple years in LA he played briefly for the Red Sox, the Braves, and the Cubs before ending up in Houston in 1968.
Lee finished out his playing career in Japan in 1969 but by the early '70s went back to the minors as a coach for St. Louis. He eventually ended up in the front office. He also spent time in the front office of the Phillies and was once named Executive of the Year for all of Major League Baseball. He has also worked for the Red Sox and Brewers as part of their staff.
Thomas is currently a scout for the Astros.

Domingo Jean
Domingo Jean, initially signed by the White Sox, only played one season in the majors (ten games as a matter of fact), and that was with the New York Yankees. The Yankees traded Domingo Jean to Houston for Xavier Hernandez in November of 1993. He never played on the pro level as an Astro but did play two seasons in Tucson before being traded to the Rangers for Roger Luce (never heard of this guy but I'm willing to bet we're related).

Good Luck Ducks, Week 9: How Far We Have Come
I was 14 years old when the Oregon Ducks made a bowl game for the first time in 26 years. In fact, it was the first time that either Oregon or Oregon State had done anything worth talking about on the football field in my lifetime. Bill Musgrave had taken over at quarterback for Chris Miller, whose promising NFL career was cut short by concussion-seeking missiles full of concussions, and all of a sudden Oregon was in a bowl game. It was 1989. Head coach Rich Brooks would eventually lead the underdog, defensive minded Ducks team all the way to the Rose Bowl and the cusp of national respectability on New Year's Day in 1995. The Ducks were stomped by Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions' perfect season.
And now, they stand as the #1 team in the country, unless you don't have a pulse. Tonight they face USC, who are underdogs at home for the first time since 2001. Every game will be nerve-wracking from here on out, but Oregon faces a Trojans team that realizes they are playing the best team they will face all season. There is no bowl game for USC this year. However, every team Oregon will face from here on out will be saying the same thing. This is the premiere team in the conference and one of the best - if not the best - in the entire country. Every opponent should be bringing everything they've got to these games.
Game time is 5:00 PDT at the LA Coliseum. ABC is providing regional coverage, because apparently teams on probation these days are still allowed on TV.

Benny Colvard on baseball cards
Benny Colvard played six years in the Reds and Royals organizations. He is now a high school baseball coach and an instructor at the Red River Ballyard in Sherman, TX. He kindly shared with me his thoughts on baseball cards.
"My favorites are my 92 Classic Best and 92 Fleer. The only cards I collect or have are team sets of the teams I played for and friends and teammates that made the bigs."
Thanks! I have the Classic Best card but couldn't find a picture of the Fleer ProCards one. Posted by Bo at 11:30 AM 0 comments

Orange Crush
Yesterday I got my contest winnings from I Don't Know...3rd Base! I knew I was getting this Atlee Hammaker autograph card, and it's interesting to see how tiny he managed to make his 13-letter name.
I was surprised to get a bunch of other bonus Giants as well! The most interesting was probably this card, which must be an error card, because whoever this short-haired pitcher is, it's certainly not Tim Lincecum - everyone knows he has a long mane.
What an appropriate day to get these cards, as the Giants won Game 2 of the World Series. I was originally going to use one of the football Giants nicknames for this post, but given the baseball Giants colors and the way they've stomped on Texas so far, (20 runs in two games - the Yankees only managed 20 runs in the entire 6-game ALCS! This World Series is making the Yankees look even worse.), I decided that the Denver Broncos old nickname was more appropriate.
