Sports Cultures in Focus: Australia
By Kevin Beane This is the first in an irregular, whenever-I-feel-like-it attempt to capture the sporting zeitgeist of a country, region, or city. It requires you to forgive my arrogance in trying to accurately sketch places I have never been, like this first one. My inspiration for this project is The Thinking Fan's Guide to the World Cup , a book of essays about soccer, politics, culture, and life in each of the 32 countries of the 2006 World Cup, each by a different, talented writer. I used to ponder and begrudge the Aussies' green and gold finery in international sporting events. Their flag's colors are blue, red, and white. It's sacrilege to adopt national colors that are nowhere to be found on your flag. But I've mellowed on my stance a bit. The field of countries that have that combination of colors on their flag is awfully crowded (the U.S., the UK, France, Russia, and the Netherlands just right off the top of my head), so I can understand a desire to set yourself apart without rewriting history. If the Australians did want to start wearing their flag's colors, however, no one could deny them that based on athletic merit. Just about 20 million people strong, they have a sporting track record that belies those numbers (to be sure, they consistently win the most medals-per-population in the Summer Olympics).

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet with a student from the Middle East and discuss our different lifestyles and cultures. Once of the comments that stuck with me was when he said, "I have never seen another country where the national religion is football."
Though he was only joking, the truth is not too far off. It is estimated that 38 million people turned their TVs on to watch Obama's historical Presidential Inauguration. 93.4 million people watched the Super Bowl. No matter what social gathering is going on, concerts, meetings, weddings (and yes, even religious services), you can be sure to catch people sneaking an ESPN update on their phone. Fans will boldly stand up for their team of choice, and sometimes won't hesitate to fight to defend them. A lone Ohio State fan walking into a crowd of drunk, angry Michigan fans can be as dangerous as going for a stroll in downtown Baghdad. Occasionally, brawls can turn deadly.

Adjust font-size: Published January 11, 2010 by: Sam Kremer View Profile Follow Add to Favorites ... Middle East Before you break out the torches and pitchforks, hear me out. I do not believe there is anything wrong with going to see the Super bowl or signing your kid up to be on the baseball team. However, where there is focus on competition, there must also be more emphasis on sportsmanship. If kids can go through high school while constantly learning to have a great deal of respect for the other team, there will undoubtedly be less sports related conflicts among fans as that generation gets older. This concept should specifically be taught to the fans, the ones screaming in the stands to support their school team. Perhaps young T-ball players can enjoy their after game snack together while getting to know members of the other teams. When playing for competition overshadows the thrill of the game, trouble starts brewing.
Bottom line: there are more important things in life than sports. Play for fun, enjoy the game, and you can still be friends afterwards. There is nothing wrong with a little friendly competition.

Shame on Schumacher While I know that Formula One (F1) racing takes place predominantly outside of the United States (with the exception of the once a year American Grand Prix in Indianapolis), and I am writing this piece for a site that focuses on American Last week in the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix, Rubens Barrichello, driving for team Ferrari, led the race from start to finish, but did not win. "How might that happen?" you may ask. Well, just as he was about to cross the finish line, team Ferrari ordered him to slow down and pull over to let teammate and F1 points leader Michael Schumacher pass him for the win. Barrichello had beaten Schumacher handily and drove what was probably the race of his life. Remember, Formula One racing is one of the most popular sports in the world and is watched worldwide by many millions of fans. The drivers are from all over the world; the teams must raise upwards of a hundred million dollars to be competitive; races take place all over the world, and the fans root for teams as fanatically as they root for their national soccer teams. In other words, this race was an important moment on the international stage.
