Do Sports Medicine Physicians only treat competitive athletes?
No, Sports Medicine Physicians are ideal physicians for the non-athlete as well, and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to become active or begin an exercise program. For the “weekend warrior” or “industrial athlete” who experiences injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the individual as quickly as possible to full function. For those more aggressive athletes, Sports Medicine Physicians are trained to assist in treating those specific injuries and problems unique to the athlete. Furthermore, Sports Medicine Physicians frequently serve as Team Physicians for local and/or National teams and clubs, allowing a close working relationship between the athletes, trainers, coaching staff, and the physician.

Mass. General study shows how exercise changes structure and function of heart
Published in: Study of Harvard athletes finds different effect of endurance, strength training. 22-Apr-2008 For the first time researchers are beginning to understand exactly how various forms of exercise impact the heart. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators, in collaboration with the Harvard University Health Services, have found that 90 days of vigorous athletic training produces significant changes in cardiac structure and function and that the type of change varies with the type of exercise performed. Their study appears in the April Journal of Applied Physiology. “Most of what we know about cardiac changes in athletes and other physically active people comes from ‘snapshots,’ taken at one specific point in time. What we did in this first-of-a-kind study was to follow athletes over several months to determine how the training process actually causes change to occur,” says Aaron Baggish, MD, a fellow in the MGH Cardiology Division and lead author of the study.
How and where fat is stored predicts disease risk better than weight
Published in: DALLAS — April 16, 2008 — A new study in mice indicates that overeating, rather than the obesity it causes, is the trigger for developing metabolic syndrome, a collection of heath risk factors that increases an individual’s chances of developing insulin resistance, fatty liver, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

What is the difference between tendonitis and bursitis?
Tendonitis and bursitis are two medical diagnoses. They are often related, and often used interchangeably, but they are different problems. Both tendonitis and bursitis involve inflammation, but they involve different structures.
    Acute Injury
An acute injury is a problem that occurs following a single event. Acute refers to the immediate time period following these injuries. Often doctors refer to the fist 48 to 72 hours following an injury as the acute setting.
