Cavaliers' LeBron James second to troubled Tiger Woods in Bloomberg 'Power List' sports rankings
By Starting Blocks
January 27, 2010, 11:42AM John Kuntz, The Plain Dealer For the Cavaliers' LeBron James, left, and Shaquille O'Neal, excellence on the basketball court translates into earning power off it. Cleveland Cavaliers forward and NBA MVP LeBron James ranks No. 2 on the "Power List" of the Bloomberg Business Week Sports Rankings. Ranked first is golf star Tiger Woods . He is on a self-imposed indefinite leave from competition as he tries to repair his family life after his wife, Elin Nordegren, and the public learned of his multiple extra-marital affairs. James' teammate, center Shaquille O'Neal , is No. 9, making the Cavaliers an unrivaled team on the list. Adam Fusfeld explains the Bloomberg/Business Week rankings: What is power? In athletics, it is usually thought of as bulging muscles and dominating performance. But in sports today, power has a different meaning as well: the earning potential of athletes, owners, agents, communities and brands, ranging from breakfast cereal to beer. Fusfeld further explains: To determine who the 100 most powerful athletes are on and off the field, Bloomberg

Just for fun Sports Rankings
Here's a fun little way to rank sports teams:
1. Determine an "adjusted winning percentage" for each team.
A team's winning percentage is "adjusted" for each game by adding the winning percentage of the opposing team (in all other games) for each win and subtracting one minus the opposing team's winning percentage (in all other games) for each loss.
Example: Michigan (10-1) has beaten Minnesota (7-4). In all other games besides this ones, Michigan is 9-1 (winning percentage = .900) and Minnesota is 7-3 (winning percentage = .700). Michigan thus earns .7 points for this win, while Minnesota loses (1 - .9) = .1 points for their loss.
Calculate "adjusted" winning percentages for each game in this way and then divide by the total number of games played to come up with an average "adjusted winning percentage" for each team. The result of this calculation is listed under the "Adj. Perc." column in the rankings below.
2. Determine an "adjusted margin of victory" for each team.
A team's "adjusted margin of victory" is calculated in much the same way as the "adjusted winning percentage" above. The basic idea is to adjust the margin of victory in each game in comparison to the opponents' average margin of victory in all other games.

All Sports Rankings: Year-End Edition
Posted: Friday May 18, 2007 11:05AM; Updated: Tuesday May 22, 2007 2:14PM cnnEAUrl=""; By Theodore B. Bressman The 2006-07 college season will be known as the year Florida owned Ohio State. But I'll remember it either as the year Roy Hibbert turned 50 or the year John Calipari finally earned my trust. North Carolina's Casey Nogueira (No. 23) celebrates a goal during the Tar Heels' NCAA championship game victory over Notre Dame. AP With that in mind, it's time to take stock in the year with the final edition of the All-Sports Rankings. The rankings are calculated by taking the Top 25 in men's and women's tennis, lacrosse, cross country, soccer, basketball, water polo, volleyball, and hockey, as well as women's softball, men's baseball and football. A No. 1 ranking receives 25 points, a No. 25 ranking receives one point. To avoid being castigated on college sports blogs, we decided to give a little more weight to football and basketball; a No. 1 gets 50 points, No. 25 gets 25 points. We aggregate the scores to come up with our final tally for the year. 1) UNC (223 points) UNC dominated college sports across the board. The Tar Heels have Top 10 teams in men's tennis, women's tennis, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, women's basketball, men's basketball and baseball. Plus, the women's soccer team won a national championship. And with the tennis, lax and baseball teams still alive, UNC's dominance could grow?

AP 6) Florida (178) Most will probably say Florida deserves the No. 1 spot, and in some ways the Gators do. But aside from basketball, football, women's gymnastics and women's tennis, the Gators weren't so dominant this year. That said, a repeat in basketball and a national title in football in its centennial year isn't half bad. Although it may not appear like it, '07-'08 is a crucial year for Florida basketball. How will Billy Donovan respond to losing all five starters? Well, he's already got one replacement point guard Jai Lucas of Bellaire High in Houston. That's the alma mater of Emeka Okafor 7) Notre Dame (165) The Fighting Irish had one of its best "All-Sports" years in a long time. Notre Dame was in the top 25 in men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, men's basketball, hockey and football. 7) Wisconsin (165) It was the year of the Badger, at least for the women's hockey team. Wisconsin was king of the ice, almost took home a men's cross country title and disappointed in the men's NCAA tourney. Wisconsin also finished in the Top 25 in football and women's cross country.

A friend of mine suggested that I write a "mission statement", i.e., an expanded explanation (the 1st paragraph of both web sites gives you a cursory explanation) of what we are trying to accomplish with these sites and in addition, why I developed them. I agreed and here is my explanation; I hope you find it interesting. In case you are wondering, I get one vote just like everyone else. While it is only fair it is killing me! Enjoy. Mark D. Hauser

SoCalHoops High School News Cal-Hi Sports Rankings: State,
We really don't like polls. You already know how we feel about the SCIBCA (Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association) Poll. To the extent people take this stuff seriously, they're missing the real point of the game, which is not to get high "poll" rankings, but to win games, have fun, and for the best players, to get a chance to move to the next level. Having said that, there are evidently just a ton of people who want to see the Cal-Hi Sports rankings. Why? Probably because they're a lot of fun. At least for the 50 schools listed in the rankings. For the other oh, say, 3,000 schools that aren't ranked, well . . . better luck next time. We continue to receive mail requesting both the SCIBCA and Cal-Hi rankings. Again, let us say, we'd really like to answer each e-mail individually on this subject, but we don't have time. Second, as for "CIF" polls, there really aren't any until the end of the season. In Southern Section there's the SCIBCA (pronounced "Skibka") Poll and then there's Cal Hi Sports, which is really a private organization which evaluates teams and then ranks them, selling the rankings to local papers. In order to obtain the rankings, you've got to get them from a newspaper. Or subscribe to Cal-Hi's newsletter. However, we contacted Cal-Hi at the beginning of the season, and they told us, "We only make the rankings available to our subscribers. However, once they are published, as far as we're concerned, they are available to anyone who wants to put them out."
