Sport Science is an ongoing television series that explores the science and engineering underlying athletic endeavors. Originally filmed as a 12-part series that was broadcast on FSN from September 9, 2007, to April 20, 2008 (Series 1), the second series (2009) also appeared on FSN. Series 3 (2010) was picked up by ESPN The series is filmed inside a Los Angeles airport hangar or on location using a mobile laboratory. Each episode on series 1 focused on testing certain aspects of athletics (such as human flight and reaction time), while series 2 either poses more questions from previous episodes, or tries to re-analyze sporting moments or trials and tribulations, puts a human against animals or machines, or even checking against other sports or challenging the odds with data gathered using motion sensors and accelerometers. Professional athletes are featured prominently and are used to test the limits of the human body. In addition, host John Brenkus also participated in cases where an "average Joe" was required.

  • DEUTSCH ESPAÑOL Home About ... Hunger Qualitative Research in Sport Science Ina Hunger, Jörg Thiele
For the last ten years qualitative research approaches have been of growing interest in the comparatively young interdisciplinary field of sport-science, especially regarding its social and educational sections. This article discusses the subjects handled, and the methods used concerning different object understandings, as well as the importance of 'qualitative' results in our discipline in general. Moreover, it expresses how far different projects refer to proven research designs of the mother disciplines, respectively which methodical variations are used. Besides chances, mainly problems concerning the (current) efforts to find an own sport-scientific profile within the framework of qualitative research are pointed out. Finally, there are some remarks referring to concrete research practice.

Post SSI Conference Summary
Dr. Bob Murray will present at the 27th SCAN Symposium: Optimizing Performance, Health and Wellness Through Nutrition, March 10-13, 2011, Chicago, Illinois. Mark your calendar! July 2011 in Chicago, SSI to sponsor Hot Topics in Sports Science. More information coming later this fall. The May 2010 conference in Chicago on Building Muscle: Challenging Current Dogma was the first in what we hope to be a series of conferences sponsored by Sports Science Insights. The intent of the conferences is to transfer cutting-edge sports science knowledge from top-notch scientists into the hands of sports health professionals. We chose Building Muscle as the first conference theme because of the widespread misconceptions about how muscle strength and mass are best developed and because of the exciting advances in strength science and nutrition being made in laboratories around the world. Click here to take a look at the Conference Faculty and Conference Summary for a glimpse of what the Building Muscle conference was all about.

Home Library Health World of the Body Two approaches ‘Doing science in the context of sport’ is one definition of sports science. Arguably the greatest scientist seriously to study sport, Nobel Laureate A. V. Hill, did so in this vein — ‘The complaint has been made to me — “why investigate athletics, why not study the processes of industry or disease?” The answer is twofold. The processes of athletics are simple and measurable, and carried out to the utmost of a man's powers: those of industry are not; and athletes themselves, being in a state of health and dynamic equilibrium, can be experimented upon without danger and can repeat their performances again and again’ (1927). Only a minority of top-class athletes are prepared to offer themselves as subjects for experiment in the way which Hill implies, but they are an invaluable minority. With their help, much has been learnt about the human body performing at its limits. However, this is not the approach which would be favoured by Sports Councils, governing bodies of particular sports, or the majority of top-class sportspeople. The organizations which fund most sports science research are seeking support and service to their ongoing training programmes. This approach to sports science is much less likely to produce results which are fundamentally illuminating, but obviously it serves substantially better the purpose for which it is designed.
