What is Aeronautics? Aeronautics is the science of flight. Scientists and engineers who study aeronautics learn about how and why airplanes fly. Using what they learn, they can design better, safer, and cheaper-to-build airplanes. To understand how NASA scientists and engineers begin this big job, we need to first learn how an airplane flies . Then we can answer a few other questions including: When we are done here, we can jump into learning what tools are used to design an airplane
How does an airplane fly?
Most of us have probably seen or felt wind blowing things like flags or kites around. But how is it possible that heavy airplanes (some weighing almost half a million pounds, or more than 200,000 kilograms) are able to be supported by air high above the ground? The answer may sound strange at first, but it's actually the

The Mt. SAC Aeronautics Program is the largest two-year college program of its type in California and is nationally recognized as one of the finest. Currently, approximately 500 students are enrolled in our aeronautics courses, including Air Traffic Control and Commercial Flight. College credit for flight training is available through concurrent enrollment in our flight courses, but flying is not required to obtain any of the degrees within our department. We sponsor the Mt SAC Flight Training Association, which owns and operates training aircraft at College Aviation, our flight facility at nearby Brackett Airport. Additionally, the Mt SAC Flying Team competes with other colleges throughout the nation in aeronautics events, giving our students an opportunity for exceptional professional experience. We are also an FAA approved Air Traffic Control School (ATC) through the FAA Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI Program). Mt SAC is designed for commuting students – no college dormitories are available. California residents are subject to course and material fees that typically total slightly over $400 per semester for full-time students, but residents of other states and international students pay approximately $3000 per semester. You should review the

DIVISION OF AERONAUTICS
Welcome to the Division of Aeronautics website!
The mission of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics is to further safe and efficient air travel throughout Illinois. The Illinois State Aviation System is one of the largest in the nation - it’s comprised of over 870 individual landing facilities. It’s also quite diverse - Illinois is home to everything from O’Hare International Airport, to Municipal General Aviation Airports, to private grass strips in farmers’ backyards. The services we provide to the public are as varied as our landing facilities. We assist with the creation, improvement and continued operations of public airports through financial assistance, inspection and technical oversight. We provide aviation safety and education programs to pilots, aircraft owners, mechanics and industry professionals, and we operate and maintain a number of aircraft in support of state government operations.
